Royal Signals Relays 2012
[18th-Feb-2012]
The
annual Royal Signals Relays was again held at Hetton
Lyons Country Park, Houghton-Le-Spring on Saturday 18th February. The undulating course was made even harder by
the strong cold wind and occasional wintry showers.
The
men's race consisted of 6 legs and the women's 4 legs, with each runner doing 2
laps to give 2.25 mile. With over 100
teams entered and a mass start the changeover marshals had to have their wits about
them to ensure all changeovers went smoothly on the narrow course. Blyth had 2 men's senior teams, 1 women's
senior team and 1 women's vets entered.
A
young senior men's 'A' team was led off by "old man " Robbie, who was
heard to say before the start "I may be the oldest but none of these young
whippersnappers are going to beat me today", with Scott Povey on 2nd leg followed by Calum
Storey, Jake Jansen, Michael Scott and Chris Lillico. Robbie ran a creditable 12:46 but was pipped by 1 sec by Chris's 12:45 as the 'A' team finished
in 29th place. The men's 'B' team of
Peter Holmback, Martin Scott, Brian Singleton, Dave
Bradley, Ian Baxter and Iain Singer finished 48th.
The
women's vets team oh Heather Christopher, Hayley Masterman,
Helen Morris and Susanne Hunter all ran well to finish as 9th women's team
overall and 4th vets team, just 12 seconds behind NSP vets in third place. The senior women's team of Phillippa Baxter, Alison Lowes, Claire Riches and Heather Barrass were 24th team.
