RUNNING July ’09

COMMENTS

Our continuing mission: to boldly drivel where no running publication has drivelled before.

ODDS & SODS

Indoor Mini-athletics

Blyth Running Club will be starting some indoor mini-athletics at Blyth Sports Centre after the school summer holidays. The sessions will be held on a Wednesday evening from 17:00-18:00. The age group will be under 11’s with a minimum age of 8. They will be based on the Norwich Union Shine awards. The cost will be £1.00 per session

Coaching

UKA are changing their coaching strategy to be more in line with other sports and in future all coaching courses will spend more time focusing on the technical aspect of athletics. From September all coaches will do a UKCC course with a more balanced delivery of how to coach and what to coach. This means that all courses will be longer, the level 1 course becomes two days, level two becomes four days. The price also increases dramatically, the level one will rise to £250. There will also be more assessments/practicals, for example the first day of the level one will be held in September, and then the coaches will go back to their clubs and practice their skills for six weeks before returning for the second day of the course. This means a lot more work for aspiring coaches but it probably means that people will not just attend the course unless they actually intend to do some coaching.

Club Flag

Blyth have finally purchased a Club flag to be used at all Club events and wherever the tent maybe. Not sure who is going to look after/transport the flag. Many thanks to Dave K who spent many hours designing the logo and searching the internet for the best price.

Club Subscriptions

At a recent committee meeting, certain comments were raised when it was mentioned that some Club members had not paid their subscriptions for 2009. It was pointed out that club races were only open to paid-up members, so in theory anybody who hasn’t paid their subs for that year should not be competing in the Summer Cup, Handicap races, Winter Series. Everybody agreed that there should be some leeway as it is impossible for everybody to pay their subs on January 1st, plus not everybody is at the sports centre at the same time as Ralph, however the general consensus was that everybody should have paid their subs by June 1st. This doesn’t affect new members/starters who can come along to the sessions for 2 – 4 weeks before deciding that they wish to become members. Problems arise because BRC have to pay UK athletics £5.00 for every member on our club database, so unless we know people are actually resigning from the club, then we have to pay the money.

Minutes of meeting held 7th June 2009

Apologies: Mal Darbyshire, Leanne Herron, John Mallon & Aynsley Herron

The meeting commenced at 7.08 p.m.

Minutes of meeting held 10th May 2009 were read and approved. This was proposed by Keith Willshire and seconded by Iain Singer.

Matters Arising

Blyth RC SWOT – To be further looked at by Dave Kitching, Ralph Dickinson and Kevin Freeman.

Key for Ladies changing roomMeeting planned with Sports Centre staff on 8th June 2009. See addendum.

Notice Board – Meeting planned with Sports Centre staff on 8th June 2009. See addendum.

Club Captains – To date there has been no interest for Mens Captain. After discussion it was agreed that Ralph Dickinson would be Mens Captain with Iain Singer taking up the Vice Captain role.

Chairman’s Report.

Kevin was pleased to report that May had been another good month and highlighted the following;

  • The social at the Fishing Boat Inn, Boulmer had been a great success. It appeared that all families had enjoyed the BBQ, refreshments, football, conversation, rounders etc, and to top it all the weather had been glorious.
  • The Senior Athletics League at Hexham had seen the Blyth/Wallsend team finish 3rd with some great all round performances. As well as the Junior contingent Sharon Richardson, Steve Gillespie and Peter Brown all enjoyed participating.
  • The Blackhill Bounders invitation event at Snods Edge had been well supported by Blyth members. Invitation events should continue to be fostered and valued.
  • The Summer Cup got off to a good start with 56 people completing the course.
  • Blyth members took part in the Edinburgh Marathon in what were gruelling conditions.
  • Blyth members had been out in force in various local races; the Allendale 8, the Les Alcorn 10k, the Clive Cookson 10k and the Pier-to-Pier race from South Shields to Sunderland.
  • Juniors, Seniors and Vets have been taking part in Open Track & Field Events.

Finally, Good Luck to all runners in the historical Blaydon Race on 9th June 2009.

Secretary’s Report

Ralph reported that since the last meeting membership had seen one new member. There had been no Resignations in the same period. Ralph will send out an email to remind any unpaid members that the fees for 2009 are overdue. Ralph will also advertise a vacancy on the committee.

Treasurer’s Report

Dave continues to report that funds remain healthy.

Ladies Captain Report

  • An introductory email had been sent out advertising Helen Morris and Susanne Hunter as Captain and Vice Captain respectively.
  • Susanne had been putting the feelers out for the British Masters Road Relays at Birmingham.
  • There are at least 5 ladies entering the Loch Ness Marathon.
  • It was felt that more assistance was needed at track sessions to make the ladies feel less vulnerable.

Social

The Presentation Evening had made a profit. As previously reported the BBQ at the Fishing Boat Inn at Boulmer had gone really well. Kevin reported he had received a letter from Leanne offering her resignation from the post of Social Secretary as she felt she was unable to carry out the job effectively. Kevin and Ralph will discuss this with Leanne to see if she can be persuaded otherwise.

No report

Juniors

The Young Athletes League Fixture 2 on Sunday 17th May went well. Ralph will send a “thank you” letter to Ian Woodward, and also remind him to pay for St John’s for the event organised by NSP. The next YAL fixture is Sunday 21st June; again any help would be appreciated. Craig Birch had run for Gateshead in Track & Field Fixture in Scotland. The Junior Beach Race has yet to be sorted, but a likely date for the event is Saturday 25th July 2009. An invitation had been received to nominate people for a Junior Sports Leaders course. Stephanie Ramsay and Craig Birch will be put forward.

AOB

Track & Field – we need to encourage more people to participate and then try and organise event participation properly.

Coastal Run – Dave Kitching will contact Mal Darbyshire about transport for the event. Ralph will send email round to members.

Blyth Valley 10k

B.R.C. has been invited to incorporate the British Masters 10k Championships into our annual event– Dave K to contact George Routledge for more information.

Links 10k – Wallsend will be invited to the Links 10k.

Club Flag – Ralph will check with Aynsley to see if any progress had been made.

Stop Watch – It was agreed to acquire a third stopwatch to assist with new coaches.

Meeting days – John Mallon had requested Ralph to ask the committee if the meetings could be moved back to a Monday, as he was unable to make Sundays. It was agreed to rearrange for a Monday evening with an 8:30 prompt start.

The meeting closed at 8:41 p.m.                        Date of next meeting – Monday 6th July 2009

Kevin A Freeman                                                              Ralph Dickinson

Chairman                                                                                  Secretary

Post Meeting Addendum – On 8th June 2009 Kevin and Ralph met with Bruce Ledger, Bill Sharp and Paul Metcalfe to discuss a number of issues. It was agreed that the Sports Centre would supply a key for the Ladies Changing Room. Helen Morris & Susanne Hunter are to take overall responsibility of the key to ensure that it doesn’t go astray.  It was agreed that the Notice Boards would be moved to the opposite wall nearer to the lift. This is not ideal but is the best compromise for the moment. The Store Room adjacent to the Sports Hall has BRC’s Sports Hall equipment stored within. This is made up of 9 bags of varying sizes and 6 Reverser Boards. Unless we utilise (HIRE) the Sports Centre to make use of this equipment they want us to remove it. Keith has plans to do exactly that, so the continued storage should be guaranteed. Keith can confirm.

Junior Meeting

There will be a meeting at Blyth Sports Centre on Monday 20th July at 18:00. Everybody from the Junior section is invited to attend. There will be a presentation of four ‘Athlete OF The Match’

T-shirts from the YAL fixtures.

Other things to discuss will be:  Summer holidays and training, Cross Country, Mini Indoor athletics, Coaching requirements, Northern YA Relays.

National Young Athletes League

After three matches in the 2009 YAL Blyth Running Club (combined with Alnwick Harriers) currently stand in second position, 1.5 points behind Birtley. In the three matches so far we have finished second, first and third and promotion looks a distinct possibility.

The last remaining fixture is Sunday July 19th at Monkton Stadium.

Anybody is welcome to come and support and even better if they can help out.

Coaching Sessions

So far this year we have had sprint coaching, a few hurdles sessions and a pole vaulting session. Hopefully, next year we will be able to organize similar sessions before the Track and Field season starts. High Jump coaching is still on at Monkton on Friday nights.

Well Done

Rebecca, Kirstie, Kalvin and Chris Lillico all represented Northumberland in the inter counties combined events – with varying degrees of success

Craig Birch has been selected to attend a Young leaders Camp at Rugby School.

Craig and Adam were second and third back in their age category for the Blaydon race.
