Saturday also saw our largest ever contingent of junior athletes (plus two seniors), travel to the English Institute of Sport at Sheffield for an indoor track and field meeting. The Northern Athletics Indoor Open meeting is an early season event where athletes from all over the country come to set early season benchmarks.

First up was the U13 girls long jump. Hannah Wilson made her Blyth debut and jumped out to 3.98m which gave her 2nd place. Sadie Parker set a big PB with 3.75m, whilst Ruby was just shy of her PB. Next up in the 60m there was a Blyth 1-2 with Maya Turner running a club record 8.67s, with Madeleine Liddell scoring PB with 8.88s. Ruby Farrell also set a new PB. Josh Chrisp was 2ndfastest U13 boy, with another club record 8.48s, with Joseph Anderson smashing his PB. In the U15 boys race Stewart Bestford Smashed his PB with 8.02s. Our U17’s were also in action in the 60m, Heather Macdonald set a new PB with 8.23s, whilst Courtney won her heat and Erin Anderson made her Blyth debut with a PB 8.93s

In the high jump there were mixed results, Sadie equalled her PB with 1.20m to take 1st place, however Hannah didn’t record a mark. Later on in the U17 event Ellie Morris started her season with an excellent 1.55m. Christopher Njai scored an indoor PB in the shot putt with 2.83m.

Back out on track coach Craig did battle with Courtney’s dad Henry over 600m, with Henry just coming out on top. Prior to this Josh Fiddaman went in the fastest heat of the 600m, setting a club record over the distance of 1:26.16.

In the long jump Josh Chrisp took 1st place with 4.61m, whilst Joseph Anderson recovered from early fouls to set a new PB, whilst Christopher put in a consistent series just shy of his PB.

The 150m races were simply fantastic. Stewart Bestford stormed through his heat to record 19.01s, before 3 Blyth athletes lined up together in one race. Madeleine Liddell ran a stunning 21.04 to take victory, one of the fastest indoor 150m times in the UK this year and a club record. Just a couple of tenths behind was Maya, with Sadie also recording a great time. In the following heat Hannah Wilson put in a superb performance with 21.66, the 4th fastest U13, with Ruby also setting a PB. No fewer than 4 girls beat the previous club record! Joseph Anderson ran a great race to set a new PB.

Finally it was the 300m, and what a finish! Dale Turner smashed his indoor club record with 37.51s, whilst Adam Swalwell recorded huge PB with 38.44s. John Wilson did the same with 40.12 after injury set-backs. Heather Macdonald smashed her indoor PB and took club record with 42.81s, whilst Courtney knocked a big chunk off her PB. Finally, Chloe Barrass made her indoor debut and ran a superb controlled run to set a PB of 46.92s.

Sunday:             Sunday saw the club hosting the 59th Blyth Sands Race. This is race steeped in tradition and it is great to see so many runners turning out on a cold day in December to take on what was an extremely challenging course. Well done to Chris Morley of North Shields Poly for finishing first.  Full results on the web site.

Also on Sunday, Peter Holmback and Ian Baxter were at Allendale for the 25th running of the Hexhamshire Hobble Fell Race.  Peter and Ian finished the 10 mile course in 1:25:47 and 1:25:53 respectively.  Full results HERE.
