The annual Elswick
Good Friday Relays took place as usual at Newburn
Business Park on Friday April 18th.
Unlike last year's snow and icy winds, this year was sunny and warm with
a cooling breeze. Following the same
format as last year there was four races, a combined U13 boys/girls race, a
combined U15 boys/girls race, senior/vet women's relay and senior/vet men's
relay, with U17's being classed as seniors.
Last year's u13's boys team were
again all running in the same age category and performed fantastically well to
win the prize for first team, with Taylor Glover (1st) and Josh Fiddaman (3rd) winning individual prizes, and being ably
supported by Connor Marshall (13th), Adam Swalwell (17th),
and newcomer Harrison Legge(33rd).
Unfortunately these were the only
juniors from Blyth running this year with no 15 boys, or u13 and u15 girls.
Both senior women's team were a
mixture of senior's and vets and therefore had to race in the senior category,
with the 'A' team of Leanne Herron, Lauren Barrett and Helen Morris finishing
24th, unfortunately the 'B' team had a late withdrawal but Anne Craddock and Bethan Sproat still ran but were
obviously recorded as an incomplete team in the results.
Finally to the men, a young senior
men's 'A' team finished 15th, and only slightly older 'B' team 32nd. Both the men's vets teams were rather harshly
disqualified for folding of numbers so that the sponsors names couldn't be seen,
but rules are rules and lets learn so that it is doesn't happen again. It is worth noting that this rule applies to
ALL races, so be warned. If not dq'ed the vets 'A' team would have finished 15th and the
vets 'B' team 35th. Fastest Blyth runner
on the day was Bradley Clough with 11:28.
