Blyth Running Club Juniors recently held their two handicap race
of 2 miles which were based on a 2 lap course using the beach path and
finishing on Blyth promenade. The runners
were all handicapped according to their age and ability so that anyone of the
runners could win. The conditions for both
races were bright and breezy, with a cold northerly wind for the youngsters to run into for the final mile. There
was just over 40 runners in the first race, and with ages ranging from 7 – 17,
it was the younger members of the club
who were set away first. The first
runner back was Lottie Christopher who led from start to finish, with newcomer
Thomas Dockey in second place and Leo Hawkins finishing in third place, one
second in front of Finlay Scott. A week later, they returned for the second
race and this was won by Lucy Ross-Knight, who finished 6 seconds in front of
Anya Christopher with Katelyn Willshire in third place. The fastest time of the
night was set by James Young, while Charlie Hedley was the fastest girl.
The Juniors also started their track
season when they had their first fixture in the North East Youth Development
League at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. For some of the younger members it was their
first time on a track and they all tried new events, with Anya Christopher
giving an impressive performance in her first ever hurdles race. All the
youngsters performed well and there were victories for Alice Dungworth in the
U15 girls 100M, Charlotte Ramsey in the
U17 Girls 100M and 200M, while Lydia Lindsay also claimed a win in her 200M
run, while Charlie Hedley was an easy winner in the 1500M. for the boys, wins
came in the U13 boys 100M and 200m with Adam Swalwell, while Joey Orange won
the U17 boys 1500M race. This meant that Blyth finished in third position on
the day.
