Senior Track & Field Meet 4 –
York
[14th-Aug-2011]
In
the final 2011 Track and Field meeting of the year, the combined
We
always look to have both our allocated event slots filled; this gives good
opportunities in the A and B “races” or sections of the field events. It is
equally important to fulfil the requirement of providing a particular number of
officials to each event, timekeepers, track and field judges and assistants are
always eagerly sought after, indeed many of our competitors when not competing
in their events do assist with judging.
Points are awarded for athlete’s positions within their event plus the
provision of the timekeepers, judges and assistants.
Of
the combined team, Blyths men had many excellent
performances, with Ken Turnbull (Hammer), and Scott Povey
(400 m Hurdles) setting Pbs and breaking the club
records! A special mention to our Terry Hart though. Terry also had a Pb
in the Hammer and also broke the club record, only for the youngster Ken
Turnbull to break the record again! In this event we have also had Ralph
Dickinson, the young pretender to them both, also breaking club records at
will. For Coe, Ovett,
Cram, read Turnbull, Hart and Dickinson!
Truly the competition of each meeting!.
In
his debut senior meeting Michael Scott won the 800 m “B” race and set a pb in this event and also in the 200 m. Not to be outdone Calum
Storey in only his second senior meeting set Pbs in
the 400 m and the Long Jump.
Stalwarts
of the track and field Dave Swalwell and Ian Baxter,
ran hugely impressive 100 m, 200 m and the 3000 m Steeplechase. In addition Dave then competed in the shot
put and raced the 100 m and 400 m relays for the team. Ian who is overcoming illness and injury ran
a great steeplechase; this event is not one for the faint hearted!.
The
men’s performances were overshadowed by a serious leg injury to Kalvin Hurst, Kalvin has competed
in the seniors events for two years now, often winning his events but always
pushing himself to the best of his ability.
We wish him a speedy recovery.
Thank
you to Steve Walker, Ralph Dickinson and Dave Kitching
for providing officiating duties throughout the day.
Whilst
the ladies were short in number, it did not deter the Blyth/Wallsend team from
covering all events.
Sharon
Richardson gained valuable points in the hammer, discus
and shot, Philippa Baxter ran the 100m and 400m
hurdles and made her debut in the 1500m, where she finished 3rd in the 'A'
race.
Steph Ramsey broke the club record for the 400m hurdles - in
recording a time of 83.3; Steph was also second in
the 100m 'A' race. Bethan
Sproat also broke a club record for the 100m hurdles,
winning in 21.4, Alison Lowes ran the 200m recording 37.9 and took part in the
4x100m relays.
Helen
Morris ran in the 800m recording 2.55; and was first in the 'B' string for the
3000m, Rebecca Nail won the high jump in 1.45m and was 2nd in the triple jump,
whilst Bethan Sproat won
the 'B' string for long jump and high jump.
Both Steph and Rebecca also competed in the
4x400m relay.
Our
partners in the track and field Wallsend also had many good performances, thanks
to Dan, Lee, Bill, Eric and Paul for their sterling efforts. Our Team Manager Martin Telford always comes
up trumps with the team selections, athletes often being surprised then pleased
to be given different events to take on.
On
the day we came 3rd followed by Morpeth Harriers and New Marske. We stay in third place overall and compete
again in this division next season.
Well
done to all of our team, we look forward to another successful year in
2012. Next year the league should
comprise of NSP, South Shields/Birtley, Middlesborough/Hartlepool, Richmond & Zetland, Morpeth and our good selves.
