Predictor
Race 2011
[28th-Aug-2011]
And now for something new and different.
Obviously the 3 mile run didn’t fit into everybody’s training
plan/schedule as we only had 23 runners. The course started on the Horton Road for
a hundred yards and then went past the Three Horse Shoes along the Heathery
Lonnen, turning just before the entrance on Cowpen Road and then back to the
finish at the Pub.
The whole point of the race is that it doesn’t matter who comes
first, the person who wins the T-shirt is the one nearest to their predicted
time. Robbie Barkley was the first runner back, followed by Graeme Stewart and
Craig Birch. Just before the race started Robbie asked if he could change his
predicted time from 18:45 to 16:45 and I (foolishly) agreed. With his actual
time for the three miles being a very respectable 16:55, Robbie was then only
10 seconds adrift and for a long time it looked as though he would win the
T-shirt. BUT then came Charley sprinting up the hill past Harry McCabe to clock
21:58 against her predicted time of 21:50 to be only 8 seconds adrift.
So Robbie won the bottle of wine as first runner back and
Charley got the White T-shirt – more importantly they both get JEDWARD posters.
After the race, everybody went to the Three Horse Shoes where
Andy Griffin was going to give a talk about the early days of the Club. First
he performed the presentation to the two winners and then he proceeded to talk
for about an hour, reminiscing about the old days. Several past members were
also in attendance and it was good to see Robbie Barr, John Charlton, Michael
Morris, John Patterson, Michael Black Snr, Andy Brown and Rob Hall all sharing
their anecdotes about the “good old days” – although it has to be said that the
training schedules then would probably scare a lot of runners of today.
The enthusiasm of Andy was plainly evident and the contributions
of the others explains why Blyth initially got their good reputation, which
hopefully we are maintaining and building on.
Some stats from the race, 23 finishers; 6 people took longer
than they thought they would, wile 17 ran faster than they said they would,
Charley was the closet with 8 seconds over, while Dawn Phillips was 2:47 faster
than she thought. Joseph Woods said he would do 8 minute miling and then
proceeded to give his predicted time as 25 minutes – if he had given 24:00 he
would have won the T-shirt!
Thanks to Dave K, Dave Miller, Sheila, Christine, Bethan and
Steff for marshalling.
