Newton Aycliffe 10k
[Mon 21st Jun 2011]
On an
overcast Sunday morning, 30 runners from Blyth made their way down the A1 to
Newton Aycliffe for the 5th race in the year's Grand Prix series, the Newton
Aycliffe 10k This was the first time that
the race had been included in the GP, so was a new experience for most of the
Blyth runners. Due to problems obtaining
parking at the usual venue, the race headquarters had been moved to the Oak
Leaf Sports Complex, a 10-15 minute walk from the start and finish areas. The race itself consists of 2½ laps around
Newton Aycliffe's housing estates, with the first half of each full lap being
gradually uphill and the second half gradually downhill. Although not the most scenic of courses a big
plus was the road closures, resulting in nice traffic free running. The rain managed to hold off for most of the
time with the odd shower being welcome in the warm, still conditions.
First
back for Blyth in a very creditable 9th overall was once again Robbie Barkley
with a time of 36:11, followed by Sam Dodd with 38:33 for a pb and 20th place. Next back for Blyth and winner of the prize
for 3rd lady overall was Julie Clark in a pb of 40:31, just 2 seconds ahead of
Graeme Stewart. Heather Christopher, the
5th Blyth finisher was awarded first prize in the F35 category. Well done Julie and Heather. Unfortunately, while in the top ten, Michael
Butters turned his ankle half way through the race and had to pull out.
Both
Martin Gaughan and Claire Riches are missing from the results, I have done my
best to insert them in the correct finishing positions, if anyone knows better please
contact me via the link at the bottom of the page.
