Junior Beach Races
[7th-Jul-2011]
Blyth Running Club recently held
their annual beach races and just over 100 children took part, with the ages
ranging from 3 years old to 14 years old. This year's races were sponsored by
England Athletics and CE Electric and their mascot “Vic Voltage” was in
attendance to start the races and warn the children about the dangers of
electricity and to recognize danger of death signs and
electrical hazards.
On a warm, sunny day and with
the tide out all the races were on the beach and there was a large crowd of
spectators and children as the first race was set off by the CE-Mascot, Vic
Voltage. This was a 200 meters race for the Under 6’s and Vic managed to run
the first ten yards before being overtaken by the runners. The first girl back
was Lottie Christopher of Bede Academy, with Matthew Rawlinson, of St. Andrews
, winning the boys race. The under 9’s ran a distance
of 400 metres and Eve Devereux of new Hartley First School was the first girl,
while Lewis Percival of St. Andrews won the boys race. In the under 11 categories the youngsters had
to run 800 metres and Rhian Purvis was the first girl, while Harry Davey of
Burnside was the first boy. The under 13’s
ran a distance of 1200 metres, with Dannielle Coulson of Lord Lawson
School Birtley winning the girls race, while Ryan Green of Newminster took the
boys prize. The Under 15’s ran a distance of 1.0 miles and the Girls race was
won by Charley Hedley of Cramlington Learning Village with Elliot Kelly of
Marsden taking the boys trophy. Everybody who ran in the races was given a
medal and the race winners were presented with trophies by Vic Voltage – who by
this time was starting to feel the heat!

There were photo opportunities
available for the young children to have their pictures taken with Vic, and the
two Josephs, Charlotte and Bethan all had theirs taken - even though Bethan was taller than
Vic!
