Club Handicap Race
12th July 1998
A request from the Committee members to
bring the race forward to July and to hold it on a Sunday resulted in 34 runners taking
part, much better than last year's entry of only 20. But it did bring the RAIN - the whole
race was run in terrible weather and it is a credit to all competitors, officials and
stewards who braved the "Summer" conditions - thanks to you all. Steve Walker
battled through to the front and held on to win well from Joe Potts, with previous winner
Dave Kitching in third place. Coming next was John Miller just holding off Robin
Fentum, and in sixth place Andy Brown, fastest on the day having started off from back
mark. A group of four followed Andy closely in; George Young just beating Gareth Hope, Ian
Cansfield and Neal Hedley. Owing to the adverse weather conditions, none of the course
records were threatened.
Those who responded to George Young's challenge to predict their time without wearing a
watch are also listed below. There's just no knocking Andy back…
