Club Handicap Race
5th May 1993
The start went off like clockwork
thanks to the very efficient officials - Keith Willshire, Steve Marshall, Dennis Hankin,
Eddie Woods etc. Then some 70 minutes later, with the singing of that well known tune
"Sack the Handicapper", Jim Lewis was spotted miles!! ahead of everyone else. I
think you call it a handicapper's nightmare but here was Jim Lewis, who I have refused to
talk to (lucky bloke) since the handicap, coming in way ahead of my estimated time for
him. It was said afterwards that he ran 5 minutes faster for the distance than he had done
before, some consolation for the poor disheartened handicapper! There were some
consolations between positions 6 and 36; 30 runners came in and they were within 3 minutes
26 seconds of one another, so the handicap was not too bad after all. What about the race.
I think there were favourable comments re the course and I think the distance is about
right. The time of year may also become popular in time and lastly, but probably the most
important, the juniors featured in the evening and were there at the presentation when the
medals and trophies were handed out on the same evening. I think this must be a plus.
Who ran well? - everybody in my opinion, but there were some excellent performances such
as Jim Lewis, Brian Dudding, Stuart Henderson, Teresa Gaughan and Andy Brown to name but a
few.
Junior Handicap
What a great finish with Lisa Reay being pipped at the post by the fast finishing
Christopher Stobart. It was difficult to handicap the Juniors, and it is a new experience
for us all. The handicapping for the younger children was probably not as good as it
should have been, which is no fault of the Juniors, who were a credit to the Club in the
tremendous effort that they put in. This was obvious at the finish, where there was a line
of prostrate bodies who had collapsed because of their maximum effort. I know that all
Junior helpers were very proud of their efforts.
Lastly, I hope you enjoyed the event. Thanks to all who ran, for your efforts and thanks
to all who marshalled; without you there would be no event.
