Race 8 – Tynedale “Jelly Tea” 10 Mile – Sun 18th Aug 2019

The morning started as most race days with the pre-race routine.  Early alarm, coffee and a small amount breakfast. Jo, Sandra and myself were travelling together and left a sunny, getting warm Ashington at 8.15am for our journey to Ovingham, arriving at our destination not much after 9am. It was a blustery day over in the Tyne Valley.  We got parked and headed to registration HQ for our numbers. After collecting our numbers, we wandered back to the start where I bumped into one my work colleagues Cheryl.  We had a little bit of time so time for a short warm up and the obligatory team photo of 40 or more Green and Whites.  We then wandered off to the start, myself and Jo having a little natter and heading to the back to keep out of the way of the speedy runners and before we knew it off we all went.

I had a time in my mind which was under 2 hours which is nowhere near the dizzy heights of my pb of 1 hours 46 at the Kirkley Big 10 some 5 years ago... but ten miles is ten miles and time is relative to the person.  I knew there were a few people in my division running so all I could do was my best on the day.  The first few miles went by pretty well keeping a half decent 10.30 min miles.  Some nice downward hills helping the speed and a nice breeze.   I could see a green and white vest in the distance so my aim was to catch it and I did, it was Fiona and we ran very close to each other for most of race, cat and mouse, keeping each other going.   It was a very pleasant route and before we knew it 3 miles and the water station was upon us.  I grabbed a bottle although I had my trusted water bottle with rehydration salts.  I took a few very large gulps of plain water and discarded the bottle and plodded off.  There were four of us running along at a similar pace, myself and Fiona from Blyth and two Julies who seemed to be friends who were running together.   We kept the pace up until we started to hit the hills at mile four which slowed me down.  At this point there were many of the faster runners coming back long so we shouting words of encouragement to each other which made the time go much quicker.   I took the run the flats and march the hills approach until 5 miles where there was a bit of a kafuffle with someone in a car and buggy who had decided that they wanted to use the road even though it was closed!!  I carried on to the turning point where I saw Eileen Armstrong, from Tynedale Harriers, and gave her a quick hug (what an inspiration to be still at the running club at almost 80!!).  I then shot off downhill!! Yeh!!! As I pulled away from the rest of them I was enjoying the speed enormously, well speed for me!!, at about 6 miles when my stomach started to rumble!! Oh no!! the runners trots I thought!!   I managed to carry on for a few more miles passing a few of our Blyth runners coming the opposite way and shouted words of encouragement at them.    Then I really had to slow down and walk and start looking for a suitable bush!!!   Fiona came trotting past me and off she went into the distance and I knew that that was a much needed point lost in my division and my target time was slipping by but hey hoh….  Eventually I found myself a bush!!! And all was well for the last mile and half.  One killer hill later and I trotted in in just over 2 hours.

I jogged down to run HQ and grabbed a sandwich and a drink and found Jo and Sandra, had a quick chat with Fiona and Micky from Elswick and we were off home.

As soon as I was home I dived into the bath with my espom salts and dozed off and went over the days event in my mind.  All in all I wasn’t too disappointed as I survived another race.
