Race 9 - Tynedale 10 Mile – Sun 31st
Aug 2014
On a pleasantly warm day at the end of August, 20 Blyth
runners assembled for the short bus trip to Hexham in plenty of time for this
year’s edition of the long-established Tynedale
Harriers’ ‘Jelly Tea’ 10 mile road race. This was also the ninth race in
our 2014 Grand Prix, and 17 of our runners were looking to improve their scores
in that competition – Divisions 3, 4 and 5 were all well represented – as well
as having a good race and appropriate recovery fuel afterwards (I refer of
course to the race name, and not to time spent in the hostelries of Ovingham, where the race finishes).
Now
what was I saying about ‘pleasantly warm’? Make that ‘very hot’ when it
came to running ten miles in the strong late-summer sunshine. Plenty of
runners, including some of our own, found it a big enough challenge just to
keep going in those conditions, and there were quite a few who struggled to
take advantage of the downhill nature of the second half of the course after
the effort of getting to the end of the climb(s) out of Corbridge.
Given
the warmth of the day, some impressive performances were recorded by our
athletes, with the outstanding result probably belonging to Brad Clough, who
not only finished 8th overall but also set a new PB by a considerable margin,
despite the course and conditions being far from favourable.
Congratulations should also go out to Dave Bradley (1st MV60), Heather
Christopher (1st FV45) and Claire Calverley (2nd
FV35) who all came away with prizes. With several of our members also
picking up medals from the Masters awards, there was a lot of green-and-white
on show at the prize giving!
Thanks
are due to Tynedale Harriers for continuing to
organise this long-standing favourite race and to all of the marshals who did
such a fine job on the day.
Please note that recorded times are the "gun"
times, individuals chip times may be different.
