Race 8 - Gateshead Quayside 5K – Thu 21st August 2014
179 runners gathered near the Millennium Bridge for the
inaugural running of this fast and flat 5K race, including 13 representatives
from Blyth RC. Conditions were very good, with the squally showers relenting
for the duration of both registration and the race and temperatures being
pretty close to perfect for racing. A slight headwind for the first half
of the race was the only handicap but even this was reduced by the shelter from
all of the developments (and trees) on the Quayside nowadays.
With
the race being only just over half full there was plenty of room on the course,
which was also well enough marshalled to avoid any issues with the usual
evening users of the Newcastle bank of the Quayside. We were all into our
running straight away, heading west along the river followed by a swift u-turn
at the far end (good practice for the Winter Series!) and then back and over
the Millennium Bridge for a finish immediately we got to Baltic Square.
The
standard at this race was very high by local road race standards – 21 of the
179 finishers broke 17 minutes and half way down the field was only a fraction
over 20 minutes – but the Blyth contingent did themselves proud with several
new PBs across all of the Grand Prix divisions.
Despite
the relatively high cost for a 5K, this race seems a good addition to the local
circuit and will hopefully prosper in years to come. It is certainly good
to see Gateshead Harriers staging a road race for the first time in a good few
years.
