Race 11 - Maltby 7 Mile – Sun 9th Nov 2014

The Maltby 7 was the 11th race of the 2014 Grand Prix competition and took place on Sunday the 9th November in Maltby Village, just south of Middlesbrough. As many runners already have the counting 6 races in the bag, this race was always going to have a low attendance - but despite that 6 Blyth runners made the trip south down the A19.

There was no attendance from Division 1. Division 2 however had 3 runners and Shaun Dodd led from the start to finish in the top 50 as the first Blyth runner taking maximum points. Ian Baxter followed soon afterwards, followed by Steven French.

Heather Christopher had it all her own way in Division 3 and took maximum points. Claire Calverley also ran unopposed in Division 4 to also take maximum points.

Terry and Gloria MaCabe (not in the GP) also ran well on an undulating course. No chance of running this race in future years as the race organisers informed us afterwards that the event had outgrown the village and this was the final running of the event!

Race 10 - Great Cumbrian Run Half Marathon – Sun 5th October 2014

On a cool but dry and only slightly breezy Sunday morning – almost perfect conditions in fact – nine Blyth runners made the journey over to Carlisle for the last of the ‘long’ races in this year’s Grand Prix.  There were over 1200 runners gathered in the grounds of Carlisle Castle for a start through the city centre before heading off into the countryside to the South East and then back past the football ground, along the finish to the Brampton-Carlisle which most of us know well and then finally into the finish at Sheepmount Athletics Stadium.

If you weren’t right at the front, it took quite a while to get through the start (so there are significant time differences for ‘gun’ and ‘chip’ times for most runners) and was then fairly congested for a couple of miles but otherwise the event seemed to be really well organised, marshalled and supported.  Several of us really appreciated the amount of support that was on the streets of the handful of villages that the race went through in the middle miles.  The finish area was also really good with the track finish creating a good atmosphere and an excellent opportunity to be encouraged on by our club mates who had already finished.

The course is not flat but in reality could only be described as gently undulating and, with most of the uphill in the first six miles, was a genuine opportunity for good times.  No doubt assisted both by this and the good weather, four of our nine runners set PBs, with good times for most of the rest as well.

A special mention should go to non-Grand Prix runner Richard Shillinglaw, whose first half marathon this was, and to Graeme and Steve who had both decided that the chance to run a quick half marathon seven days before a full marathon was not going to be turned down – good luck with that guys!

Race 9 - Tynedale 10 Mile – Sun 31st Aug 2014

On a pleasantly warm day at the end of August, 20 Blyth runners assembled for the short bus trip to Hexham in plenty of time for this year’s edition of the long-established Tynedale Harriers’ ‘Jelly Tea’ 10 mile road race.  This was also the ninth race in our 2014 Grand Prix, and 17 of our runners were looking to improve their scores in that competition – Divisions 3, 4 and 5 were all well represented – as well as having a good race and appropriate recovery fuel afterwards (I refer of course to the race name, and not to time spent in the hostelries of Ovingham, where the race finishes).

Now what was I saying about ‘pleasantly warm’?  Make that ‘very hot’ when it came to running ten miles in the strong late-summer sunshine.  Plenty of runners, including some of our own, found it a big enough challenge just to keep going in those conditions, and there were quite a few who struggled to take advantage of the downhill nature of the second half of the course after the effort of getting to the end of the climb(s) out of Corbridge.

Given the warmth of the day, some impressive performances were recorded by our athletes, with the outstanding result probably belonging to Brad Clough, who not only finished 8th overall but also set a new PB by a considerable margin, despite the course and conditions being far from favourable.  Congratulations should also go out to Dave Bradley (1st MV60), Heather Christopher (1st FV45) and Claire Calverley (2nd FV35) who all came away with prizes.  With several of our members also picking up medals from the Masters awards, there was a lot of green-and-white on show at the prize giving!

Thanks are due to Tynedale Harriers for continuing to organise this long-standing favourite race and to all of the marshals who did such a fine job on the day.

Please note that recorded times are the "gun" times, individuals chip times may be different.

Race 8 - Gateshead Quayside 5K – Thu 21st August 2014

179 runners gathered near the Millennium Bridge for the inaugural running of this fast and flat 5K race, including 13 representatives from Blyth RC.  Conditions were very good, with the squally showers relenting for the duration of both registration and the race and temperatures being pretty close to perfect for racing.  A slight headwind for the first half of the race was the only handicap but even this was reduced by the shelter from all of the developments (and trees) on the Quayside nowadays.

With the race being only just over half full there was plenty of room on the course, which was also well enough marshalled to avoid any issues with the usual evening users of the Newcastle bank of the Quayside.  We were all into our running straight away, heading west along the river followed by a swift u-turn at the far end (good practice for the Winter Series!) and then back and over the Millennium Bridge for a finish immediately we got to Baltic Square.

The standard at this race was very high by local road race standards – 21 of the 179 finishers broke 17 minutes and half way down the field was only a fraction over 20 minutes – but the Blyth contingent did themselves proud with several new PBs across all of the Grand Prix divisions.

Despite the relatively high cost for a 5K, this race seems a good addition to the local circuit and will hopefully prosper in years to come.  It is certainly good to see Gateshead Harriers staging a road race for the first time in a good few years.

Race 7 - Hamsterley Forest 10K – Sun 6th July 2014

A week after the Hadrian’s Wall Half Marathon, 6 Grand Prix competitors showed the well established Blyth characteristic of failing to learn and showed up for the Hamsterley Forest 10K in deepest County Durham.  They were joined by one of the survivors of the previous week’s St Cuthbert’s Way Ultra (huge respect to Graeme for this), two other Grand Prix competitors and two other members who had obviously decided that this would be a fun way to spend a Sunday morning.

‘Fun’ was not the first word that sprang to mind when, shortly after the start, we turned right and were faced with several hundred yards of serious uphill running.  After completing a swift downhill and a couple of kilometres of almost flat (by comparison) stuff, it was downhill and through an ankle-deep and three- or four-pace wide stream and then up the second big hill.  Not quite as steep as the first one, but it made up for it with extra distance.  Another serious leg-muscle burner.

Those who made it to the top of the second hill without having half killed themselves actually had a very pleasant last four kilometres to run, with plenty of scope to make up for some of the time lost.  After not far short of 500 feet of climbing, there had been lots of that.

This race was actually pretty well organised (despite the delayed start) and very well and enthusiastically marshalled.  As with all trail races, there were places where you just had to run at the pace of the person ahead of you, but to be honest there weren’t many of these and I, for one, was very happy not to have to try to run any faster than that at times.  The only obvious downside was that the insects were seriously gorging themselves on all of the unprotected flesh, but I suppose that we should have expected that in a forest in the middle of summer.

Race 6 - Hadrians Wall Half Marathon – Sun 29th June 2014

This, the sixth event of the 2014 Grand Prix, took place in the wilds of west Northumberland, just to the north of the Roman Wall.  On what was quite a cool day for late June – no bad thing, that – but mercifully dry, thirteen Blyth runners set off in an event that had long since reached capacity and were soon faced with downhill, followed by uphill, followed by more uphill … and so it would go on.  As billed, the race was truly multi-terrain with the early and late miles on road but with several miles across trail (which was quite technical in places) and then along forest paths.

With the significantly undulating (OK, make that hilly) nature of the course added to the two thirds that was off-road, this was never going to be a race for PBs but some good times were recorded nonetheless and the scenery – for those who managed to appreciate it – was all that could be expected.

Most of our runners seemed to have enjoyed the experience, at least after they had stopped having to run and hopefully a few of us will try this one again in the future.

Race 4 - Pier to Pier – Sun 11th May 2014

The fourth race in this year’s Grand Prix saw the inclusion for the first time this century of Sunderland Strollers’ Pier to Pier race as one of the ‘middle distance’ events.  The race is billed as being of about 7.5 miles but most of us found that it was actually just less than seven in practice.  33 Blyth runners, including 10 who are not participating in this year’s Grand Prix, made the trip to South Shields on a bright and breezy Sunday morning for a race that is always sold out and this year had 740 finishers.

As many of us found to our surprise when we made it off South Shields beach, there is no fixed route for the race.  In at least two places, we were faced with a choice of left (nearer the sea) or right (where firmer surfaces could eventually be found).  The only thing that most people were convinced of by the time that they finished was that it was definitely shorter ‘the other way’ – no matter which choice had been made!

The race is largely on trails, with the first mile and last few hundred yards on beach and a very small amount on pavement if you chose that option.  Combined with a couple of short, sharp uphill sections, all of this made for quite challenging conditions for those used to road running but we were grateful for the wind being behind us and there was good support all the way, especially toward the finish at Roker.

There were some good results for Blyth, with Brad and Ash in the first ten home and Heather being second in her category.  A good time was had by all, and a new race for many was added to the list of ones to do again.

Dave R

On Sunday 11th May the 4th Grand Prix race of the season got underway in South Shields. The Pier to Pier race hosted by Sunderland Strollers is a popular, multi-terrain race which begins on the sand adjacent to South Shields pier and finishes, again on the sand just before Sunderland pier. As the route is point-to-point, a couple of intersections leave the runner to decide which path to take before the routes merge again. This eased the congestion on the coastal tracks and led to some ‘interesting’ debates both during and after the race.

This race was a good result for the club as two Div 1 runners finished in the top 10 - Brad Clough (9) and Andrew Henderson (10). Div 2 runner Graeme Stewart (30) split the Div 1 pack finishing ahead of Jake Janson (33) and Jon French (41). The good turnout means there are too many other good BRC performances to mention.

The run measured just under 7 miles by most people’s reckoning, yet the official results categorise the distance as 7.5 miles. All finishers were treated to a decent goodie bag at the end of the race.

Race 3 - Sunderland Half Marathon – Sun 4th May 2014

Sunday 4th May saw the running of the 3rd race in this year’s Grand Prix series. A recent spate of injuries and an unfortunate clash with the 1st Senior T&F Meeting of the season meant neither event was attended to its full potential. The Half Marathon of the North was also a pricey fixture which again was a factor in the low turnout; that said those who made the trip to Sunderland were treated to a well organised event with a good level of support on closed roads.

The race began outside of the Stadium of Light and headed out over the Wearmouth Bridge. The course headed in and out of the city on various routes providing a mixture of city and residential scenery which was surprisingly undulating in places. The route looped back on itself in places giving the opportunity to shout encouragement to other BRC runners. At about the 10 mile mark a Sikh wedding party had turned out and gave the runners massive applause as they passed. At 11 miles the course headed through Roker Park which provided a welcome change of scenery before leading on to the last uphill stage back over Wearmouth Bridge to the stadium.

Divisions 1 and 2 had a single runner competing so maximum points were collected by Lee Cuthbertson in Div 1 (first home for Blyth) and Steven French (pb) in Div 2. Division 3 was more competitive with Martin Scott, David Potts, Heather Christopher and Mark Ponton turning out and finishing in that order (with Mark missing out on an equal pb by 1 second). In Division 4 Mal Welch (1st HM) and Hayley Raithby took the points and in Division 5 Claire Mason (pb) also had it all her own way and picked up maximum points.

There were also 6 BRC runners not competing in the Grand Prix who ran. Adele (pb) and Davina Lonsdale recorded identical times and were followed home by Andrew Grieves, Sonia Miller (1st HM), Lynn Munro (1st HM) and Alison Lowes.

* 1st HM and pb’s as indicated by RunBritain

Race 2 - Northumberland Half Marathon – Sun 16th March 2014

After enduring very windy conditions at the first Grand Prix race of the season, many of the same runners – plus a few looking forward to their first road race of the year – made the much shorter journey to Kirkley Hall, hoping for more PB-friendly conditions in the second race.  No chance!  While the skies were clear, the air temperature very spring-like and the roads dry (none of last year’s blizzards this time), the wind was howling in from the west with no mercy, averaging something like 25 knots but often gusting at well over 40 knots, accordingly to reliable meteorological sources.

After a 15 minute wait at the start (for reasons few if any of us understand) while that wind whipped through us, over 600 runners – including 35 in the green-and-white (plus one new member without a club vest) - set out to run a short loop around the edge of the hall grounds followed by a much longer loop around the roads of rural Northumberland.  Once under way, the race seemed to be well-marshalled with sufficient water stations and no issues with traffic on the roads.  With most of the race being through unpopulated areas, we were all the more grateful for support in the villages of Whalton and Ogle and even more so for the fellow runners (wisely taking the day off) and family seen on the course, many with cameras in hands so there will be plenty of photographic evidence of how much we all enjoyed it.

Despite a couple of casualties from the Blyth contingent, there were some very impressive performances in seriously testing conditions, notably Brad finishing twelfth overall and Cath winning her age category.  Amazingly, especially as there was a two-and-a-half mile mostly uphill stretch straight into the teeth of that gale, there were even PBs recorded by some of our runners.  Well done to all concerned.

Those new members who have run both of the two Grand Prix races to date will be pleased to know that it is not always like this.  Hopefully, at least some of the races in the late spring and summer will be in conditions that will not actually require an effort to stand upright in

Race 1 - Snake Lane 10m – Sun 23rd February 2014

33 Blyth runners got up very early on Sunday morning and made the long trek south to Pocklington for the first race in this year's Grand Prix, the 'Snake Lane 10'. They were greeted with the customary warmth by the host club and very welcome dry and mild conditions. The wind, on the other hand, was not at all welcome. More on that later.

The race organisation all went very smoothly and a prompt start saw just over 800 runners head off into the countryside with the wind behind them. The first four miles were eased considerably by the wind but as the course turned back towards the south we were faced by a strong and gusty southerly that was increasingly into our faces. The last two and a half miles on the main road was particularly hard work for many with the wind now being very much 'against'.

The welcome back into Pocklington was much appreciated by everyone, with impressive numbers of locals at the finish and with the usual memento of a 'Snake Lane mug' for everyone.

Well done to all who ran and particularly to those in their first race with the club, most of whom set PB's despite the conditions, and to the prize winners on the day. So to the prizewinners, and a huge congrats to the senior men for third place which is a worthy achievement in such a high profile race.  I believe Cath Young and Heather Christopher were both third in their respective age categories although there was some confusion over Heather's award.

Please note that recorded times are the "gun" times, individuals chip times may be different.
