Race 12 - Brampton - Carlisle 10 Mile – Sun 17th November 2013
A
good turnout for the traditional end of season Grand Prix race, the Brampton to
Carlisle 10 Mile Road Race, on Sunday 17th November. With some of the divisions still undecided
competition was fierce, especially divisions 2,4,5 and 6. With good weather a number of pb's were recorded, with Jake knocking over a minute off
his to break 60 mins for the first time, Ian Baxter reducing his pb by over 2 minutes and Peter Maylia
knocking a few seconds off his.
Congratulations to Cath who was first in her
age group.

Report below courtesy of Steve Dobby.
Looking
at the forecast for Sundays penultimate GP race at Jedburgh did not give me a
warm and fuzzy feeling, however, upon waking on Sunday morning all looked well,
in Cramlington anyway. I drove up to
Jedburgh with Peter M and Jake J and the weather slowly turned from rather
pleasant to rather wet and windy by the time we arrived.
I
led the lads to the wrong place for our numbers but we eventually got sorted at
the town hall. We then me up with the rest of the Blyth posse with a total of
13 souls about to brave the weather.
The
weather then proceeded to confuse the hell out of me, sunny one moment then
cold and wet the next, I eventually plumped for shorts and a thermal t under my
vest, which I regretted within the first 10 mins of the race.
After
a quick tour of the town from the start we left the A68 to run through a
housing estate, dodging dog shxt as we went then it
was up the usual hill within a mile of the start, the weather was nice and
sunny at this point and made all the better for having some running company in
the form of Calum and Dave B.
The
first half was actually pretty pleasant apart from the blooming 10K competitors
who turned back after 3 miles, part timers. So on we
went with a little hint of what was to come on the return trip when the leaders
were streaming past us on the way back at about the 6 mile mark and they were
leaning into the wind ! it was great to see Peter brown and Jake J mixing it up
with the leaders !.
It
was time for another hill between 6 and 7 and this is where young Calum pulled away from me, I sensibly didn't try to stay
with him !!!, just after the half way point as the course swung around for the
return leg there was a chap giving out sweeties which I dived into , only to return
with a single cola bottle, not the jelly babies I was aiming for, rats. So for
the next 10 mins chewing the cola bottle took my mind off running for a bit !.
Now
the wind started to make its presence felt but I was still feeling pretty good
at this point and soldiered on. The long road at 9 mile was particularly
testing in the wind but I was with a group of lads and we took turns taking
point which helped a bit. Now fast forward to mile 11 where I was starting to
tire and on the way to 12 there was a rather taxing hill that ate into my
reserves of energy, once crested there was a couple of further little rises and
we were back into town for the run in so I endeavoured to keep the pace up,
unfortunately 4 lads got past me in this last half mile but I kept them close
enough to see if I could get them on the line in a little bit of last sprint
action, which is exactly what I just managed to do, wooo
hooo !!!. I got in under my 1:40 target as well so
was well pleased. Then it was off to cheer the rest of the gang in ! Everyone
was really trying hard getting to that finish line !!! thankfully there were
bananas, water, lucozade and a choccy
bar on offer ! which were readily consumed !
So
all in all a pretty good day, yes it was a tad windy but it is a canny course,
mostly through the countryside, but the weather gods seem to know what day this
race is on as the wind direction and strength was exactly the same 2 year ago
!!!
Well
done everyone who took part !!!
Race 10 - Tees Valley Half Marathon – Sun 29th September 2013
Twenty
Blyth members travelled to Redcar on Sunday 29th September for the Tees Valley
(read Redcar) Half Marathon, the tenth race in this season's Grand Prix. Although sunny, the 1155 runners were greeted
with a strong headwind for half of the course.
This did not seem to hamper Angela Johnson, Daniel N'Jai
and Jon French who all recorded pb's, with Jon's
marathon training obviously paying dividends as he was first back for Blyth in
37th position with a time of 1:24:01.
Heather Christopher was first Blyth Lady in a time of 1:35:50. Well dome all.

Race 7 - James Herriot Trail Race (14k) – Sun 28th July 2013
Congratulations
to all those who completed the James Herriot Trail Race on Sunday 28th July
which was the seventh race of this year's Grand Prix competition. After a couple of very dry weeks the heavy
overnight rain had made the course wet in places with a few large puddles and a
swollen stream to navigate. Although
only just under 9 mile, the hilly course together with the strong head wind
along the high section maked fast times an
impossibility.
Heather
Christopher who was third lady overall and Lindsey Chapman first O35 woman -
well done ladies.

Race 6 - Bridges of the Tyne 5 Mile – Tue 9th July 2013
So
we gathered on Newcastle Quayside on a hot sticky evening for the sixth race of
this year's Grand Prix, The Bridges of the Tyne 5 Mile event hosted by Tyne
Bridge Harriers. Dressed in running gear we were obtaining strange glances from
the multitudes of people just strolling or cycling along the Quayside on such a
pleasant evening, not to mention the hundreds sitting in the numerous bars. With this many people around it looked as
though the race was going to be chaotic, but apart from a congested start, good
marshalling ensured that the race progressed very smoothly.
Starting
on the north of the river between the Tyne and Millennium Bridges the route
takes the runners west along the Quayside before turning at the Newcastle
Business Park and returning eastwards to finish on the Quayside adjacent to the
mouth of the Ouseburn, running under or past seven of
the bridges of the Tyne.
First
back of the 35 Blyth runners taking part was Jake in an excellent 11th position
with a time of 29:10, closely followed 3 seconds later by Peter Brown. First Blyth female was Heather Christopher in
88th overall in 33:57, both Peter and Heather were second in their respective
age categories.

Race 5 - Alnwick Trail Half Marathon –
Sun 23rd June 2013
Race
5 of the 12 in this year's Grand Prix saw 20 of us heading up the A1 to Alnwick on Sunday the 23rd of June for the Alnwick Trail Half Marathon. The event, which is held in conjunction with 5k
and 10k races, is run within the grounds of Alnwick
Castle and Hulne Park and is essentially
"off-road", being a mixture of tracks and grassland. As the web site says, there are some
challenging climbs, which are rewarded with stunning views over north
Northumberland and towards the coast, especially from the highpoint of the
course at Brizlee Tower.
First
back from Blyth was once again Peter Brown in 8th place, followed closely by
Peter Holmback and Jon French in 12th and 13th
positions respectively. Amazingly Peter Holmback ran a half marathon pb
on this very testing course and when you consider that his tapering included an
18 mile run 2 days prior this achievement is even more astonishing.
Congratulations
to Heather Christopher who was second lady overall and first F40.
Also,
a mention for Dave Kitching who completed the 10k.
The
full results can be found via a link from the Run Alnwick web site.

Race 4 - Allendale 8M – Sat 1st June 2013
After
the relative heat wave of the preceding week it was typical that race day
started cool and damp. The Allendale 8
is actually 7.7 miles, so apart from a couple of Blyth's 25 runners who had
done this race before, pb's were virtually
guaranteed, even on this definitely "not flat" course. The race takes place on the same day as the
annual town fair, with a few stalls, hog roast (yum yum) and a strong man
competition to help the supporters pass the time while the runners are out on
the course enjoying the fantastic scenery.
Congratulations
to Peter Brown, 5th overall and 1st M40, Heather Christopher (1st F40?), the
men's team of Peter, Jake, Peter and Adam who claimed the men's team prize and
Heather, Lindsey and Julie for being 2nd ladies team.
The
full results can be found the Allen Valley Striders web site.

Race 3 - Cragside 10K – Sat 13th April
2013
Well
spring had finally arrived on Saturday for the Cragside
10 K, the mist had lifted and the sun was making an appearance, I even went
without gloves for the first time this year, which is about time as I have had
them on for the last 6 months.
There was a great turnout from Blyth with contestants from each division vying
for a good position. There was a 1km walk up the hill to the start giving us
all a good idea of how quick the finish was going to be, if we had any strength
left in the legs after the climb up to that point.
Since it was downhill for the first K we all went off rather quickly with Peter
brown, Jake , Lee and Jon leading the way, all making a great start at the
front.
Once we hit the bottom of the hill we were all catching our breath and trying
to slow down a little bit for the hills ahead, from 2 - 5 k it was rather
"lumpy" with some short ups and downs to keep it interesting.
After 5km the route started to climb, then climb some more, and more all the
way up to 8km, what a long drag that one was ! I came across a couple of
casualties on the way up, poor Jon French had pulled up with a hamstring
problem then next was young Jake who had his own set of problems.
Finally at 8km the dash to the finish began, trying to catch my breath and make
up time from the slow uphill section, expecting Heather Christopher to come
flying past me at any second.
With about 1/2 mile to go Calum came breezing past
me, and I expected Steven French to be catching me soon also, which he was ,
thankfully I heard him coming and just managed to keep ahead !.
Watching the rest of the gang come in there were some impressive finishes from
Julie, Ray and Lindsey coming in strong and Dave Potts just caught Shaun on the
line in with a rather impressive finish also !.
So all in all a great day out in the woods, though I suspect that we will all
have tender quads tomorrow !.
Well done to all those who ran !
Bring on the Allendale 8 ! which may also be a little bit hilly , wooo hooo ! (Steve D)

Race 2 - Run Northumberland Half Marathon – Sun 10th March 2013
Early
morning start on a bitterly cold day - things can only get better. Not so, by
the time we got picked up by the park-and-ride buses in Ponteland,
a snow blizzard had struck! Simple matter then of queuing up for numbers
(getting numb-er(?)) and trying to stay warm until
the start. Next problem - we were all on the start line but facing the wrong
way. Sorted and off we set. Extremely cold, very windy and a course that was
described as 'lumpy'. Not sure how they managed it but a circular route, into
the wind most of the way and with more uphill than downhill.
With
four finishers in the top 25 this was a good race for Blyth, first back was
Jake in 18th, closely followed by Lee Cuthbertson
(19th), Peter Brown (21st) and Jon French (24th). First Blyth lady back was Heather Christopher
in 110th place overall. An amazing 13 of
our runners recorded half marathon pb's.
The
official results are still a little incomplete, so the results below and Grand
Prix tables are the best we can do at the minute, if anyone can fill in the
blanks or spot any mistakes please let me know asap.
so that the tables can be corrected.

Race
After a day of snow, cold but bright weather conditions
greeted 31 of Blyth’s finest as they joined over 750 runners for the start of
the Snake Lane 10 mile race at Pocklington. Obviously
the conditions suited as a number of our runners set PB’s with their
performances. First back for Blyth was Jake Jansen in a very good 49th
position with a PB of 60:27, followed closely by Peter Brown and Lee Cuthbertson in 54th and 58th place.
First back for the ladies was Heather Christopher in 224th position.
Unfortunately the prize giving had to be cancelled due to the chip timing
system, used for the first time in the race’s history, failed and so age
categories and team positions are not known. It did, however, mean that we
managed to get all our members out of the bar sooner than expected but we got
back no earlier as the coach driver, relying on a mix of SatNav
and Mal, got lost and took us through the middle of York!
