England Athletics Affiliation Fees

A part of your annual subscription fee of £16.00 for Seniors and £6.00 for children, £5.00 is paid by Blyth Running Club to England Athletics. England Athletics in their wisdom have decided to increase this £5.00 to the figures stated in the table below.

The club affiliation fee will stay the same over the next few years.  Some reasons for the increase maybe:

AVIVA will not be renewing their sponsorship of UK Athletics

Currently England Athletics rely on 92% of their income from England Sport

and need to become more financially viable themselves.

Athletics is seen as being a relatively cheap sport compared to other sports

                    such as football, swimming

           Heather Christopher

Congratulations go to Heather who has been selected as a travelling reserve for the England Team who will be competing in the British Masters Cross Country Championships at Belfast on November 10th.

Heather is the first Lady from Blyth to receive this honour.

                          Grand Prix 2013

Rules

The format for the 2013 Grand Prix is a 12 race season with four races in each of three categories – up to 10km, up to 10 miles and above 10 miles. Each entrant to the Grand Prix will count their best two results from each category.

These are the only rules for the club Grand Prix.

Members of Blyth Running Club are required to comply with all ‘local rules’ set by the organiser of each event. (Note that these rules will often include age limits, which may result in some of the younger club members being unable to participate in some races).

Members are also expected to comply with good etiquette at all times and specifically must comply with all instructions from race organisers and marshals, must do nothing to adversely affect the good name of Blyth Running Club and should do nothing to either favour or adversely affect the performance of other Grand Prix competitors during races.

Season Composition

The races for the 2013 season are shown on the attached sheet. These have been selected by the BRC Grand Prix Working Party and any feedback after events can usefully be given to any member of this group (but preferably by e-mail or in writing if you want it to be remembered).

At the time of announcement, the exact dates for most races are still to be confirmed. These will be publicised when known. In the event of any of the announced races being either cancelled or clashing with another race on the list, the Working Party reserves the right to select an alternative race where practical and both time and the calendar allowing.

Park Run - Two sides to a coin

In the last issue I wrote several facts about Park Runs, Shaun Dodds has come up with his ideas. I don’t want to start a monthly debate but here are Shaun’s facts. If anybody wants to discuss then I am more than willing

I felt I had to put pen to paper after I read a very one sided article and I felt the runners of Blyth should hear a view from another side.

So here are the facts

I don't run the summer cup or winter cup but I have started to run park runs, not every week but twice a month maximum.

For me it’s a time trial or an effort session that I need to build into my training plans as they help me to measure where I am. Example: I ran the Les Alcorn 10k and at the 5k mark my time was bang on what I had run in the park run the previous Saturday, I knew then I was giving it everything I had and I felt good about doing the second 5k in the same time or better.

I know that other running clubs will use the park run as a social event to promote their running clubs. The park run I visit has what I can only describe as an unofficial blue and white day where all the members of a local club turn up and run or Marshall in blue and white and enjoy tea, coffee and good catch up and embrace the park run for their own benefit. Could we not consider a green and white day?

I have also spoken to members of other clubs that will encourage new starters to use park runs to get used to racing and setting targets.

I know of triathlon clubs that cycle to them on mass then run and head off again.

And finally on the week of reading the runners comments for Blyth, I heard a female vet 65 discussing park run, She is second in UK in the park run league age related stats, She wants to be the number 1 in the UK. She runs every week to try and beat the another vet running in Coventry.

She says people shout at her because they know she has to get under 22 minutes to get her number 1 uk position. Yes less than 22 minutes for a vet 65 female. She is not only racing everyone in that park run but the whole of the UK. I feel this is an inspiration.

For the record her name is Shirley Rose GIBSON 22:25 VW65-69 her park run score is 91.82 % and runs for Darlington Harriers & AC

So let’s have look at the questions asked.

Do clubs get a mass influx of new members (Why pay £X to join a club when you can get a free race every Saturday morning?).  Perhaps A Green and White day monthly at park run may get you a few more members

Are the timekeepers UKA timekeepers (I doubt it, but people still use times as PB’s).

I’m not sure about this but as the results end up on the power of ten running website which is linked to UKA I would like to think so otherwise it make a sham of power of ten website.

Will Club members do a Park Run instead of T&F or Cross Country – Yes and it happens! This goes back to why are these events on a Saturday on the north east and 101 other similar questions.

Do Park Runs have the same strict rules/regulations enforced on them as road races? Not so sure, I’ve see Under 11’s/Under 13’s run them, a herd of cows blocked the runners on the Town Moor (if that happened at the BV10K what would happen to BRC?).

I would agree that the issue of children is one to watch but as a parent and a runner I would not let my children run over 5k until over the age of 13. But some park runs do offer a monthly 2k park run for children.

Do Park Runs have a Race Referee, Race Adjudicator, UKA accredited Officials – I doubt it.  The spirit of park running doesn’t require referees just good old fashion common sense and respect. If your not happy or not seeing that come to the one I go to and you will see what I mean.

Run by volunteers? Some may be unpaid. Yes volunteers and you are asked when entering run park runs if you would consider marshalling every so often.

Are they insured, first aid cover available?

Don’t know about insurance but I have seen first aid boxes.

And finally Re cows, Steve Gillespie tells an excellent story about Brampton to Carlisle when he had to round them up during a race. So I don’t think cows are only linked to free 5k races they are also involved in the oldest 10 mile road race in the UK that you have to pay £14 for a number a time and a cup of water.

If anyone has any other thoughts on this I’m open to keep this topic alive in the running comments.

So let’s not be narrow minded about Park Runs. Look at what it can do for you and for us “Blyth Running Club”.

             Autumn Relays

The Autumn Relays are a three person team event.  Each team member runs one lap of the course (Normally 2.35 miles, on the industrial estate, start/finish would be the finish area of the Winter Series).

As in normal relays, the first leg runners set off together, then as your team member returns, the next team member sets off.  All this is strictly controlled.

Teams and the team running orders are selected by one of the race organisers.  Together the three team members of each team should be equal in ability to all the other teams!   Ladies and gentlemen can be on the same team.  The minimum age of an entrant is 16 years old on the day of the race.

This year’s event will take place on 24th October at approximately 7:15 pm (time to be confirmed).

Names to Ralph or Iain Singer by 17th October

             Senior T&F League

In next years Senior T&F league, Blyth will be in the same league as; Durham City Harriers, New Marske Harriers, Houghton AC ,Scarborough AC, Middlesbrough & Cleveland / Hartlepool.

The proposed dates for the four matches are: Sunday May 5th 2013,  Sunday June 9th 2013,  Sunday July 7th 2013 and Saturday August 3rd 2013

                                            London 2012

On Wednesday 6th July 2005, IOC President Jacques Rogge announced that the “Thirtieth Olympic Games are awarded to London”. Which may explain why I was stuck on a railway platform at 06:00 on Friday 3rd August 2012 at Ponders End waiting for a train to take me to the Olympic Park ready to start my first shift as a Games Maker? Arriving at 06:30 there was still quite a buzz and an anticipation of what was about to happen. The army were in charge of security and it only took a few minutes and I was into the park and making my way towards the Stadium. My team leader was somebody I knew from the Northeast, Mick Laidler who works for NOVA on the Great North Run and City Games, and as we congregated in our meeting point in the bowels of the stadium I noticed that the team consisted of all age groups, genders and backgrounds and experiences – some had worked on International Grand Prix, Commonwealth Games, while for some it was their first experience.

Although we were called “The Field of Play” team, it was explained that our main duties were putting the hurdles out and ensuring that the arena was ready for the athletes – in practice we erected/dismantled most of the equipment (high jump/pole vault/hurdles/steeplechase and even the throws nets). When asked if I had put hurdles out before I naively answered “Yes” -I mean how hard is it to put hurdles on a coloured mark? But then we split into two groups – dumpers and setters and I began to realise.

I was put into the dumper team (each dumper was given a lane, which led to the inevitable schoolboy humour of whose dumped number 2 etc etc – but it passed the time) and we frantically practiced the 'the art of Hurdle putting out and putting away'. It was a bit like formation dancing, the dumpers went out first following a trolley full of hurdles, then we stopped at the first hurdle drop off point, took the hurdles off, put them on the track and moved onto the next point. The setters would then follow us and put the hurdles into position. After the race, the setters would go out first and arrange the hurdles ready for us and we would load them onto the trolley; all the time keeping in formation;  all this with 80,000 people plus TV watching you.  During the 100 meters Hurdles, we stood in the tunnel at the start ready for damage control (if one hurdle was scratched it had to be replaced), which is where I was standing when Liu Xiang came hopping and screaming in Chinese by the side of me – didn’t seem the right time to ask for an autograph.

Before every shift, we had a team briefing where the Team Leader would go through the events and what needed to be done, this was usually to a tight schedule as TV tended to dictate that everything had to start on time. The team briefing always finished with the words “”and if that doesn’t work, we’ll just wing it!”.

We had to put out the hurdles for the 400metres, and then not only did we have this but we were on such a tight schedule to get them in and get them higher and back out for the 110metres hurdles, we were all rushing around, but then not having long to get them back out again we were out on the track during a medal ceremony, so we had to stop but I have to say that being in the centre of the track for a medal ceremony was just crazy!! The singing and noise coming from the Crowd was Unbelievable but it felt like a wall of noise just hit us I have never heard anything like it before, Unforgettable

On the Saturday, I had another early shift and was entering the park at about 06:45 when I realised that the station was full of spectators who were arriving for the athletics – the first event wasn’t until 10:00, but people just wanted to see the park and be part of the occasion.

Reports have said how amazing the Gamesmakers were, but I could not believe how friendly everybody was; even when we were finishing at 11:30 at night the Travel Gamesmakers were still cheerful, still high – fiving everybody. Even when I was travelling on the tube with my uniform on, total strangers would come and talk to me about the Olympics, ask questions, say what a good job I was doing!

As Christine was with me, on the days I wasn’t working or we didn’t have tickets we went to some of the parks which had large screens to show the events. Victoria Park had a large screen and a long zip wire where Boris Johnson got stuck, Hyde Park also had a large screen with live entertainment (Temper Trap (????), Ocean Colour Scene and Feeder). Both parks also had security checks similar to airports where you couldn’t take food or drinks in, which may explain why they were able to charge £5.00 a pint.

My last shift was the night of the 200M final with Usain Bolt. My pass allowed me access to the stadium and previously I had just watched events from the track side. But this time I went to a block of seats where we were told we could sit but if somebody turned up with a ticket then we had to give them their seat. Apart from the VIP seats, these were some of the best seats in the stadium, at the finish end looking down the finishing straight. There were a couple of relay heats, then it was the womens 800M semi final, followed by the Mens 800M final. This race was just sensational (Seb Coe called it the standout performance of the Games). Just shows how much I know, as I thought Andrew Osagie was in with a chance of a medal after the first lap – but with the seven runners in front either setting a world record, national record or PB he finished last with a PB time that set him fourth on the UK all time list).

I bumped into him after the race and he was willing to talk about the race and is a geniunely nice guy. Anyway the next event was the 200M final with Usain. Ten minutes before the race, somebody turns up with a ticket for the seat I was in – obviously a dedicated athletics fan!

The steward allowed me to sit on the stairs so I had just as good a view. When Bolt enters the track it seemed like a million cameras went off. One of the girls looking after the athletes clothes box told me that as Bolt was putting his clothes into the box he said to the young girl “You nervous?” – this just before an Olympic final, 80000 people in the stadium billionsworld wide and its just like he was running at Gateshead Stadium.

My view of 200M final                                                      Andrew Osagie

Many, many races and events later the last shift was over and equipment was put away.. many many changes of the pole vault and high jump beds later and it was time to go home.

Even on the day sessions, the atmosphere in the stadium was amazing, the night sessions and finals it was just electric. Its just not the same watching it on tv, you really do feel and see much more being there, right there. And as the credit card ad says “There are some things that money can’t buy” and this ten days was one of them – “Priceless”.

Before each shift we were given a Gamesmaker Medal (Gold, Silver, Bronze) and on the final shift you received a Gamesmaker baton as well.

Alison and Craig were also Gamesmakers. Alison worked in the Pharmacy at the Olympic Stadium, while Craig helped out with the football in the North East. Here  are the three of us in our Gamemakers uniforms.

Amazingly, people are selling these on Ebay! (the uniforms, not the photo)

Two weeks later and it was back to reality, putting the hurdles out at Monkton Stadium in front of the proverbial one man and his dog – and getting it wrong!

OFFICIALS

Officials and volunteers are always needed to ensure any event (whether is the London Olympics or the Harrier League at East Cramlington) go off as smoothly as possible. If anybody is interested in becoming an official (and we have several at Blyth and its fair to say that a NE Track meeting probably couldn’t have gone ahead last summer if it wasn’t for the Blyth Officials) then there is a course at Gateshead on Sunday 11th November.

All you need to do is decide what you wish to be (timekeeper, track judge, field official, starter, marksman) see Keith or Ralph and they will sort the rest out for you.

Next year at Gateshead we have the European Athletics Cup, the Commonwealth Games in 2016 at Glasgow, and the World Championships in London 2017.

All these events will require officials/volunteers

Chairman’s Report

I will be doing an NSP GP recee of the course again this year.  This is on Thursday 4th October at 6:45 pm.  Members are asked to inform me if they are attending.

Kevin and I are organising the Autumn Relays this year, once we have further details they will be made available.  They take place on 24th October hopefully back on the Kitty Brewster.  Anyone not running will be more than welcome to assist on the night.

Just after the Autumn Relays is the Harrier League Cross Country, the first race is to be hosted by ourselves at our course in Cramlington.  Keith/Steve are informing members when they do training there for anyone interested.  There will be a lot of jobs to be done and work to be undertaken to make this a successful day.  Hopefully we can all help.

Some of our members have been taking part in track and field this month, not wanting to single anyone out in particular but if I could mention the achievements of Diane Wallace in the vets 5 km championship (North East) and Daniel N’Jai in the open section of the Pentathlon at Jarrow.  These are excellent performances and worthy of praise.  Best of luck to Diane and Daniel for their future track and field efforts.

On a lighter note but no less praiseworthy, a young lady who doesn’t normally get the headlines is our Davina Lonsdale.  Davina was placed in her age group in the Wallington 10 km.  This is an exceptionally short race for our “distance” award winner of 2012.  Davina is no doubt just sharpening up for her next marathon!  We wish her well for her next race.

Well done to newer club member Lindsey Chapman.  Lindsey raced in the re arranged Hadrian’s Wall Challenge, winning the ladies section and coming in the top 10 runners overall out of approximately 60 finishers.  A fine start to her Blyth Running Club career.

Another newer member is Tony Holland, Tony won the Kielder Challenge. This is a trail race around Kielder at approximately 25 miles with walkers and runners taking part.

Craig Birch is being kept busy at university in Manchester.  Craig has been competing and officiating at many events over the summer.

With Diane, Lindsey and Davina together with Susanne, Heather and Helen continually amongst the prizes, the ladies certainly are doing well.  It was also good to see Claire Stewart taking part in her first cross country at Farringdon.

Kevin was asked to do timekeeping at the Great North Run.  This would have been an excellent experience.  Hopefully Kevin enjoyed it.

And finally………………….

Our Ambassador to the Americas has returned after a year away from our cooler climate.  We welcome back Miss Emma Freeman and look forward to seeing her running past her father very soon and perhaps a little later catching her Aunty Helen!

Thanks

To all those who assist at the Summer Cup.  Without whom it could not take place.  We are indebted to the 3 Dave’s; Miller, Kitching and Bradley, Gloria, Sandra, Terry, Joe, Dickie and Steven.  Thank you all.

Many thanks to Keith, for putting on this year’s predictor race and quiz.  This was very well attended and all enjoyed themselves.

Men’s Captain Report

Iain provided a report as follows:

General report on races

  • Race 5 and the concluding race 6 of the Summer Cup recently took place; Series winner overall was Jon French, closely followed by long-time leader Mark Ponton.  In third place was Richard Shillinglaw who improved his time on each race.  Well done to all competitors. Dale Smith now has the record of shortest distance covered with his DNF in Race 5.  10 steps is the new record!  There were many competitors who were very consistent, for the men namely Robbie and Ian Baxter.  The ladies too had some very consistent runners.
  • At the first XC of the season at Farringdon, Blyth running clubs senior males came an excellent 11th out of 28 complete teams.  The veterans were also well represented.
  • The annual Sherman cup took place; a report will be made on this next month.
  • I represented the gentlemen at the inaugural Highland Marathon at Aberfeldy. This was a really scenic marathon and doubled up as the North East Marathon Clubs annual race trip.  I also ran the Great Langdale Marathon at Ambleside; the report of this is on the website.
  • The Tynedale 10 mile was competed at on a hot day.  A full report is on the web site for this Grand Prix race. First back for Blyth men was Robbie.
  • Shaun Dodd has been busy winning prizes! Congratulations to Shaun at the southern version of Blyth Running Club’s Summer Cup, Shaun was 3rd over 40 male.  He also won a handicap race as well.  Prizes are not taxable Shaun! Good job too.
  • Tony Holland was First at the Kielder Challenge. A fine race by Tony. Again his report is a great read on the website.
  • We were represented by Kevin at the Vets Track 10 km championship. He was well placed in his age group.  10,000 m being 25 laps of the track at Monkton Jarrow, not an easy task. Well done Kevin.
  • The Wallington 10 km took place on a hot day. Jon and Steven French and David Potts represented the men.  First back for Blyth was Jon.
  • At the Pentathlon, Dave Swalwell and Daniel N’Jai represented Blyth.  Dave was 2nd Veteran but first Over 40, with Daniel an outstanding 3rd in the male open section overall.
  • At the Monkton Relays our junior males were accompanied by Dave Swalwell. All did very well.  Full details are available through Keith or the website.

Updates

There is not going to be a Drudge Bay Half Marathon this year on the same day as the Full Marathon.

Ladies Captain Report

Helen provided a report as follows:

The ladies are continuing to do well on the road and country. I was delighted with the ladies performances on Saturday at the Davison shield, especially with newcomers Lindsey Chapman and Anne Craddock. I believe the comments afterwards were, "never again". However a few minutes later they all admitted they loved it!!! The veteran ladies finished 8th team.

Congratulations to Lindsey Chapman who broke a new ladies course record at the Hadrian’s Wall half marathon on the 9th September in a time of 1.47.

I would also like to say well done to Anne Craddock, winner of the final Summer Cup race last Wednesday evening.

Other notable performances this month by newcomers to cross country and track were, Claire Stewart (only Blyth lady) who finished 55th at Farringdon open cross country, and Diane Wallace who ran an exceptional 5k track race and set a PB of 26:01 at the Northeast Veterans 5k track championships on the 8th September.

Finally, well done to the rest of the ladies who also ran in the above events and at Wallington 10k; the Great North Run; Redcar half marathon (Julie and Davina were 1st and 2nd Blyth finishers) and Great Langdale marathon. Exceptional running. Keep up the good work ladies.

Juniors

Keith had provided the following report:

  • Junior League/YDL - We haven’t applied for membership of new YDL league. Will either go with new NEYAL league (if it goes ahead) or miss a season. EA starting to play “hardball”.
  • Training - From Monday 1st October at Quayside. Junior relays on Monday 22nd October (course to be decided). U11’s session at Bede from 9th October. Hurdles training at KEVI on Tuesdays.

Northern Cross Country Championships – Bill McGuirk had approached BRC at the Temple Park event, enquiring about parking at East Cramlington. It appears that he would be keen for BRC to host in 2014 if this issue could be sorted. This is something for a future meeting

                     County Sportshall Trials

The Northumberland Athletics Network will be holding a Sportshall Competition at Cramlington Learning Village on Saturday 1st December.                       Junior Relays

This years Junior Relays will be on Monday 22nd October at Blyth Quayside on a new course.

                                 Young Athletes League

The National Young Athletes League is being disbanded and two new leagues are being formed, one for athletes u13/u15 and one for U17/U20. Blyth have opted not to enter these leagues and instead will be part of a newly formed NE Young Athlete League, which will be based on the format that we have been competing in over the past 5 years. This is providing that the new League gets Permits/Insurance etc from England Athletics who seem a bit “peeved” that not every club is joining the new leagues.

This years Sands race will start and finish on the beach outside the Dave Stephens Building at the Links Car Park.

                                    Grand Prix 2012

So with just the Brampton to Carlisle 10 Mile race left to go, I believe the state of the leagues to be as follows:-

Division 1    Robbie just needs to turn up to win, although top three places can change.

Division 2    Heather and Shaun 1st and 2nd respectively with Ian Baxter and Steve Dobby fighting for third.

Division 3    Phillippa 1st, with 2nd and 3rd between Martin Scott and David Potts.

Division 4    Mark Ponton 1st and Heather Barrass 2nd, with 3rd place still up for grabs.

Well done to the famous five of Heather Christopher, Ian and Phillippa Baxter, Ron Ingram and Heather Barrass who have completed all eight races in the Grand Prix this year.

                         Committee

As most members are aware, BRC have a committee which meets on a monthly basis to ensure the smooth running of the club. The committee should have 12 members but we currently have a vacancy, SO if anybody is interested in being part of the committee can they please see either Ralph or Iain and let them know. This vacancy is open to anybody – Junior, Parents etc etc
