Race 11 – Great Cumbrian Half Marathon – Sun 1st October 2017
Race 11 of the Grand Prix season and 15 of our runners headed to
Carlisle hoping that the forecast for lots of rain might be mistaken. The weather all along the A69 did nothing for
our hopes and it was still raining as everyone assembled for the start. However, the running gods were on our side
and the rain stopped just before the start and – save a couple of light showers
– didn’t really start again until over two hours later.
This is a good-sized race with plenty of local support through
the local villages. The first few miles
are net uphill (although there is nothing too bad by way of individual hills)
so it is quite important to bear that in mind if you are chasing a time target,
and at least a couple of our runners probably went off a bit too fast and
suffered for it later. However, for an
undulating route this course can offer up some good times, as shown by both
Richard and Claire running some minutes inside their PBs.
Unfortunately the organisers had needed to redesign part of the
route this year due to the closure of Sheepmount
stadium and something seemed to have gone wrong with the planning as an
advertised additional dog-leg in the third quarter of the race never happened
and the race seems to have ended up short by something like 200 yards, so it
remains to be seen whether these results will become ‘official’ PBs.
With there also having been a foul-up
with the t-shirt sizing – all the sizes were too small and they had run out of
L and XL sizes by race day morning – it all didn’t create the best impression,
which is a shame because those who have done this race before know that it can
be much better than this.
