Track & Field Meet 2 – Monkton Stadium

[30th-May-2012]

The combined Blyth/Wallsend team took to the track and field again on Saturday 26th May for the second meeting of this season's North of England Track & Field league.  Again due to injuries and last minute withdrawals we were a little thin on the ground, but thanks to the great team spirit and competitive nature of all our athletes with many taking part in 3, 4 or even 5 events, we managed to compete in most events.

We eventually finished fourth out of the six teams, just behind host club Houghton, with NSP again winning to them a perfect two out of two so far.  Although only recording 4 outright wins between us (3 for Blyth, 1 for Wallsend), we had many second place finishes, many new pb's and 5 new club records.

The first club record came in the first event of the day, the men's hammer, where Ken Turnbull, still smarting from losing his record to Jonathan Dickinson at the last meeting, threw 18.69m an improvement of 0.5m over Jonathan's previous record - let the battle commence to break the magical 20m barrier.  The other four club records came from Charlotte Ramsay in the women's 200m with a time of 27.5sec, beating her own club record by 0.1sec; Jake Jansen in the men's 1500m with a time of 4:33.7, beating his own record of 4:35.8 from 2010; Chris Lillico in the men's 400m hurdles, knocking 0.4sec off Scott Povey's previous record with 62.3sec and Samantha Richardson (in her first T&F outing for the club) with a time of 79.8sec in the women's 400m hurdles.

Winners on the day were Chris Lillico in the men's high jump 'A', Charlotte in the women's triple jump 'B', Bethan in the women's triple jump 'A' and Wallsend's Danielle Hodgkinson in the women's 1500m 'B'.

Many thanks to all the athletes already mentioned plus Calum Storey, Scott Povey, Ralph Dickinson, Helen Morris, Steph Ramsay, Heather Barrass, Hayley Masterman, Sharon Richardson and all the Wallsend athletes for taking part.  Special thanks to Team manager Martin Telford for keeping some sort of order to the chaos caused by all the last minute withdrawals.

If any other club members would like a try at T&F then please inform Ralph, Steve Walker, Helen Morris or Steph Ramsay of your interest. The next meeting is another local one at Churchill Track, Whitley Bay on Sun 1st July.

Full results can be found on the Power Of 10 web site, and on the Northern Athletics web site.
