Race 2 – Keswick Half Marathon – Sun 30th April 2017
Sunday saw 14 Blyth Running Club
members lining up amongst 683 other competitors to take on the hilly challenge
of Keswick Half Marathon in the 2nd of our 2017 GP Races.
The course boasts to be one of the most scenic half
marathons in the country and is probably one of the most challenging with
plenty of hills in the first half to keep us all on our toes.
The forecast had not been good with high winds and rain
predicted. On the day the mild conditions and heat took several of our runners
by surprise, and things weren’t helped by water running out at the 1st water
station at 3 miles, stocks then ran short at the second station but were soon
replenished for most of our runners going through, this did however mean some
of our runners went 8.5 miles without fluids.
The first mile saw Paul Whalley
take early leave of the course due to calf issues, not wanting to risk injury
this was the sensible option on the day.
The rest of the team soldiered on and first over the line
was Graham Wood in a great time of 1:37:20 followed in a mere 8 seconds later
by Richard Shillinglaw, 3rd and 4th place were also
close together for Robert Sharatt and Shaun Dodd,
heating up the competition in division 2.
First lady over the line was Sandra Watson in an
impressive 1:53:22 followed by Claire Mason keeping things interesting in
division 4.
Feedback from the field of Blyth runners was unprintable
here without a few bleeps, but judging by all the smiling faces crossing the
line it was a mainly enjoyable event and there has already been talk of
returning next year!
With the distances changing for the next 2 races it will
be interesting to see how this mixes up the table. Good luck to all those
competing in Ripon.
