Race 9 – Brampton to Carlisle – Saturday 19th November 2011

The last race in the 2011 Grand Prix series saw the club's members travelling to Cumbria in glorious autumn sunshine for the 60th running of the Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile road race.  A slightly earlier start than usual was needed this year in order to arrive at Brampton in plenty of time to pick up the electronic timing chips which were being used at this race for the first time.  By the time Leanne had arranged babysitting duties with Joe and Ian, the organisers refused to give her a chip, saying "she was too late", and unfortunately Davina (together with many others), lost her chip mid race.

The races reputation for producing fast times was well supported again this year with at least 6 Blyth runners producing pb's, Phillippa, Peter, Sam and Steve Dobby all by between 1-2 minutes and Hayley and Andrea by over 7 minutes.  First back for Blyth was Sam, in 58th place with a time of 60:21, (who will surely break the 60 min barrier shortly), and first Blyth lady was Susanne in a time of 70:01 for 215th overall.  Also a special mention to Cath who finished first in her age category.  .  The race was won by Wallsends new recruit, Ethiopian Yared Hagos in an amazing 47:51.

Race 8 – Tynedale 10M – Sunday 4th September 2011

The lure of a cup of tea and some jelly proved irresistible to the 557 runners lining up at the start on a warm, sunny day with just a slight headwind to take the edge off the temperature. A number of PB’s were set and overall the 32 runners from Blyth seemed satisfied with the morning’s efforts. First back for Blyth was Sam Dodd (41st overall) with Julie Clarke (87th) our first lady back. On the list of honours was Julie (3rd F35), Susanne (2nd F45) and Joe (3rd V60). This race was also a British Masters race and in this Susanne was 1st F45 and Heather 3rd F45.

A record 272 finishers for the race, of which 44 were from Blyth.  Robbie first back yet again with Graeme Stewart not far behind as second Blyth finisher.  Leanne was first female overall and was only 10 seconds behind the fastest time ever recorded by a Blyth lady, the 40:19 set by Jacqui Miller (Lumsden) in 1998.

This race concluded the 10k category in the Grand Prix series, just two 10 milers to go.

Race 6 – Tynedale 10k – Wed 6th July 2011

Well done to all the Blyth runners who turned out for the 6th Grand Prix race of the year, the Tynedale 10k on a warm and sultry Wednesday evening in July.  With a mixture of road and track, the course is reasonably traffic free with, after the first severe downhill mile, a few hills to test the legs.

First back for Blyth was yet again Robbie with 36:05 for 22nd place and first Blyth lady was Julie Clark, 95th overall in a time of 41:01.  A good turnout in all the divisions, especially division 3 where only one person was missing.

Race 5 – Newton Aycliffe 10k – Sun 19th June 2011

On an overcast Sunday morning, 30 runners from Blyth made their way down the A1 to Newton Aycliffe for the 5th race in the year's Grand Prix series, the Newton Aycliffe 10k  This was the first time that the race had been included in the GP, so was a new experience for most of the Blyth runners.  Due to problems obtaining parking at the usual venue, the race headquarters had been moved to the Oak Leaf Sports Complex, a 10-15 minute walk from the start and finish areas.  The race itself consists of 2½ laps around Newton Aycliffe's housing estates, with the first half of each full lap being gradually uphill and the second half gradually downhill.  Although not the most scenic of courses a big plus was the road closures, resulting in nice traffic free running.  The rain managed to hold off for most of the time with the odd shower being welcome in the warm, still conditions.

First back for Blyth in a very creditable 9th overall was once again Robbie Barkley with a time of 36:11, followed by Sam Dodd with 38:33 for a pb and 20th place.  Next back for Blyth and winner of the prize for 3rd lady overall was Julie Clark in a pb of 40:31, just 2 seconds ahead of Graeme Stewart.  Heather Christopher, the 5th Blyth finisher was awarded first prize in the F35 category.  Well done Julie and Heather.  Unfortunately, while in the top ten, Michael Butters turned his ankle half way through the race and had to pull out.

Both Martin Gaughan and Claire Riches are missing from the results, I have done my best to insert them in the correct finishing positions, if anyone knows better please contact me via the link at the bottom of the page.

Race 3 – Northumberland half – Sun 27th March 2011

On a cold morning, 34 runners from Blyth joined over 300 runners on the road outside Wallington Hall for the start of the inaugural running of the Northumberland half marathon.  The starters included Dave Cox who, having turned up without any running shoes, spent ½ hour stopping perfect strangers to try and scrounge the use of a pair of size 9’s!  By the time we all set off on the first (downhill) mile, the weather had improved to give us near ideal running conditions.  Following the laws of physics that states what goes down will have to go back up, we were soon hitting the first of many ‘undulations’.  The course was scenic, although some of the winding country lanes were a bit narrow and blind bends were a bit of a worry, as was the 2 or 3 occasions that the runners had to cross from one side of the road to the other.  Luckily the majority of the drivers using the roads were sensible.

The sting in the tail on this course was the hill at 12 miles – lots of cursing going on at that point – before a welcome downhill stretch back to the estate entrance.  Slight problem at this stage as runners were competing with cars to get into the grounds and weaving between the cars became necessary at times.  Congrats to the marshal’s for handling this situation well.

First back for Blyth in a very creditable 7th overall was Peter Brown with a time of 1:20:54, followed by Michael Butters with 1:23:12 for 12th  place and Robbie Barkley with 1:25:26 in 16th .  First Blyth lady and 3rd lady overall was Heather Christopher, 53rd overall in 1:33:28.  Rob Hall, who finished 33rd overall, was first back in the men's O60 age category, and Davina won her first ever prize as she finished first LV45 .  Also well done to two of the clubs newer members, Beverley and Mark Jennison, we hope you enjoyed your first run in club colours.

Race 2 – Haweswater half – Sun 6th March 2011

Just one week after the long trip to Pocklington for the first race in the club's Grand Prix series, members of Blyth Running Club were again on their travels, this time 29 runners and their supporters took the slightly shorter journey for the second race in the series, the Haweswater Half marathon.  Starting and finishing in the small village of Bampton, a few miles from Shap, on the edge of the Lake District, the course is basically a hilly out and back affair from Bampton, along the side of Haweswater Reservoir to Mardale Head and back.  Eden Runners, the organisers of the race, were once again blessed with good sunny weather although there was a cooling headwind on the outward half of the course.

Robbie was again first back for Blyth in 20th overall with a time of 1:22:22, followed by two newer members, Michael Butters with 1:23:16 for 23rd place and Sam Dodd with 1:25:13 in 32nd.  First lady back for Blyth was Heather Christopher, 109th overall in 1:34:22 and some 6 minutes quicker than last year, with Susanne second back in 1:36:51.

At least three of Blyth's runners managed half marathon pb’s, very impressive running on a course with over 1600ft of ascent and descent, Dave Bradley by 2 mins, Chris Stone by 4 mins and Peter Holmback by an incredible 7 mins; what a difference a week made to Chris and Peter.  Special mention to Rob Hall, whose time of 1:32:49 gave him first place in his age category.  Blyth’s contingent of 29 runners was again the most from any one club taking part.

A big thanks to Robbie and Mal for driving the mini buses, which allowed the rest of us to rehydrate afterwards in the local hostelry.

Race 1 - Snake Lane 10m – Sun 27th February 2011

And so the Grand Prix season is upon us again.  The first race this year was again the Snake Lane 10 at Pocklington near York, with 34 members of the club taking part, an increase of 2 from last year.  In fine conditions with only a slight wind the race was won by Ricky Stevenson of New Marske Harriers in a course record time of 48:03.

First back for Blyth was Robbie Barkley in 37th position with a time of 1:00:16, followed by Sam Dodd in 1:02:52 for 59th place overall.  First home for the ladies was Heather Christopher, 12th lady and 162nd overall.  There were age group prizes for Heather, Suzie, Cath Young , Martin Gaughan and Rob Hall, who was making a long overdue return to racing.  The men's team finished 8th and the ladies a very respectable 4th.

Many thanks to the supporters who travelled down to cheer the runners on and to Mal for organising the bus.
