Race 9 – Brampton to Carlisle – Saturday 20th November 2010

The miserable drizzly weather gradually improved as the coach full of Blyth runners and their supporters made its way from the North East to Brampton for the last race in the 2010 Grand Prix series, the ever popular, fast Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile road race.  With cool dry conditions and a very light easterly breeze the day was perfect for fast times, this was proven by the number of pb's obtained on the day by Blyth members.  Those pb's known about include Heather (Lisa) Christopher, Phillippa Baxter, Heather Barrass, Ian Baxter and Sam Dodds.

A total of 536 runners finished the race, with 30 of them being from Blyth - a very good turnout considering this was the last GP race of the season and many of the top positions in the leagues had already been decided.  The race was won by James Douglas of host club Border Harriers & AC in a time of 50:33, first back for Blyth was Robbie in 22nd place with 58:00 and first Blyth lady was Heather Christopher in 197th overall with a time of 1:10:14.

Race 8 – Tynedale 10M – Sunday 5th September 2010

The Tynedale “Jelly Tea” 10 mile race, is a popular race and 29 members from the club made their presence felt in the race, with 529 finishers.  With the GNR just a few weeks away this was the perfect opportunity for runners to assess their fitness.  On a tough hilly course from Hexham to Ovingham, the runners had to face a headwind for the first seven miles.  The race was won by Darren Purvis of Birtley who lead from the start and was never seriously troubled.

With this being the next to last race in the clubs Grand Prix series for 2010, competition was fierce as runners in each of the five divisions tried to amass the maximum points possible.  In division 1, Robbie with a time of 1:00:01 for 22nd overall just pipped Peter by nine seconds, Robbie now leads Peter by 1 point with all to play for in the last race at Brampton in November.

In division 2 despite a fantastic race by Graeme, Stevie G's second place has guaranteed him the division win with Graeme and Shaun fighting it out for 2nd and 3rd places.  Division 3 saw the tightest finish with only 30 seconds separating the first four finishers, Dave Bradleys victory means he cannot now be caught at the top although Heather, Dave Cox and Ian can all finish in second place.

Julie and Ron are already confirmed as 1st and 2nd respectively in Division 4 with Davina, Claire and Colin fighting for 3rd place and in Division 5, Phillippa's eighth consecutive win gives her a commanding overall victory, Heather only needs to turn up to achieve 2nd place, with Sharon and Joanne scrapping for 3rd.

Congratulations to Joe Frazer who had a good run to finish second in the M60 age category, and likewise Dave Bradley who was 2nd M55, only 18 seconds behind the category winner.  The first Blyth Lady finisher was Susanne, followed by Cath and Heather.

Race 7 – Morpeth 10k – Tue 3rd August 2010

There were 307 finishers in the annual Morpeth 10k hosted by Morpeth Harriers on Tuesday 3rd August, of which 33 were members of Blyth Running Club.  This was the 7th race in the clubs Grand Prix series for 2010 and the last race in the short category, only two more to go both being ten milers.

The normal registration venue of Craik Park had been changed to the disabled riding centre next to the start of the race, this caused some confusion for the later arrivals who had to rush to collect their numbers on time.

First back for Blyth was Peter in 15th overall with a time of 35:47, followed by Gareth with 39:23 in 49th place.  Peters victory puts him level on points with Robbie at the top of division 1.  First lady back was Heather Christopher, 128th overall in 43:54, followed by Cath in 169th with 45:58.  Julie continued her winning streak in division 4 and also posted a 10k pb, and in division 5, Phillippa maintained her record of winning every Grand Prix this year.

Race 6 – Coastal Run – Sun 18th July 2010

Following on quickly from the Tynedale 10k, the sixth race of the 2010 Grand Prix was the Alnwick harriers hosted Coastal Run held on Sunday 18th July.  This multi-terrain race was as popular as ever with a total of 805 finishers of which 30 were members of Blyth Running Club.  As the runners left the car park at Beadnell to cross the dunes for the start of the race an audible groan could be heard at the sight of the beach, or rather at the sight of the lack of beach, as the tide was almost fully in and had in fact only just turned.  This makes the first section of the race along the sands of Beadnell Bay somewhat longer, most GPS's recorded a race distance of approximately 13.5 miles as opposed to the normal distance of about 13.2 miles, the high tide also made the crossing of the burn after half a mile rather tricky with some runners going through at waist height.  The longer race distance together with the strong head wind resulted in the times being slower than normal.

First back for Blyth was Peter in an excellent 9th overall with a time of 1:28:15, followed by Robbie with 1:33:56 in 31st place.  First lady back was Heather Christopher, clearly not affected by the conditions, with a time of 1:49:46 for 171st place overall and 18th female.

Race 5 – Tynedale 10k – Wed 7th July 2010

The 5th race of the clubs Grand Prix series of 2010 saw 35 Blyth members descend on the village of Ovingham together with 500 plus other runners for the Tyndedale Pie and Peas 10k hosted by Tynedale Harriers.  With hot, humid conditions and with the course protected from the wind, the runners were very grateful for the water station at the half way point.

First back for Blyth was Robbie in 14th overall with a time of 35:38, followed closely by Peter with 35:55 in 17th place.  First lady back was Susanne Hunter, 144th overall in 44:05, followed by Heather Christopher in 179th with 45:07.

Congratulations to Dave Cox who's time of 42:37 for 101st position was good enough to secure first place in his M60 age category, and to Susanne who was third F40 with her time of 44:05.

Race 4 – Keswick half – Sun 2nd May 2010

The 4th race in the 2010 Grand Prix series took place at Keswick on Sunday 2nd May.  On a cool day with a slight breeze the conditions were not too bad for running, it was just the hills that made life difficult!  Due to last year's floods causing on-going problems with a bridge near Little Braithwaite in the Newlands valley the route was revised for this year.  The race started at Portinscale and saw the runners going down the hill from Swinside to Stair (instead of up it), and then do a loop via Little Town back to Stair before returning to the normal route at the base of Cat Bells, thankfully missing the dreaded hairpins over the cattle grid.  The route continued to Grange and back to the finish at Keswick rugby Club along the main road as normal, apart from a slight change through Keswick itself, many of the runners thought the new route harder than normal.  Blyth Running Club contributed to 27 of the 569 finishers, and with at least a couple of dozen supporters also making the trip, the pubs in Keswick reaped the rewards later.

Race 3 – Wallsend 5M – Sun 18th April 2010

In excellent running conditions, cool and dry with a slight wind, 39 members of Blyth were among the 148 runners who took part in the 5 mile Wallsend Multi Terrain race around the tracks and wagon ways of the Rising Sun Country Park on Sunday 18th April.  This was the third event of the clubs Grand Prix series of 2010, hence the large turnout of Blyth runners.

First back for Blyth was Ash in 5th overall with a time of 28:26, followed by Robbie with 28:52 in 9th place just ahead of Peter Brown in 12th with 29:09  First lady back was Heather Christopher, 72nd overall in 36:27, followed by Cath in 87th with 37:52.

Congratulations to Terry McCabe who's time of 33:42 for 40th position was good enough to secure first place in his M60 age category, and to Cath who was first F50.

Race 2 – Haweswater half – Sun 7th March 2010

One week on from the long trip to Pocklington, the members of Blyth Running Club taking part in the Grand Prix were again on their travels, this time 30 runners and their supporters took the slightly shorter journey for the second race in the series, the Haweswater Half marathon.  Starting and finishing in the small village of Bampton, a few miles from Shap, on the edge of the Lake District, the course is basically a hilly out and back affair from Bampton, along the side of Haweswater Reservoir to Mardale Head and back.  On a glorious day for running, cold with vary little wind and clear blue skies, the views over the surrounding mountains were stunning if one took the time to admire them.

First back for Blyth was again Robbie in 13th overall with a time of 1:19:56, followed by Peter Brown with 1:21:26 for 19th place.  Steve Richardson, this time not having any mechanical problems on the way to the event, had a good race to finish as third Blyth runner in 83rd overall with 1:30:41.  First lady back was Susanne, 144th overall in 1:36:46, followed by Heather Christopher in 188th with 1:40:12.

Julie Lemin and Peter Brown both managed half marathon pb’s, remarkable running on a course with over 1600ft of ascent and descent – bring on the flat courses.  Special mention to Terry McCabe, whose time of 1:35:04 gave him 2nd V60, only 35 secs off first place in his age category.  Blyth’s contingent of 30 runners was also the most from any one club taking part.

Race 1 - Snake Lane 10m – Sun 28th February 2010

A fleet of cars and a coach left Blyth early on Sunday morning as the runners and their supporters took the long drive to Pocklington, approximately 10 miles East of York, for the Snake Lane 10, the first Grand Prix race of the 2010 season.  A total of 32 Blyth members ran in the event, almost 5% of the 666 total, including a number of new members; Heather Christopher, Claire Riches, Ian Baxter and Carol Watt who were all racing for the first time, and will hopefully be back for more.

The bad weather forecasted for the day never materialised and although there was a strong cool headwind for the first few miles of the windy course along the rural lanes around Pocklington, it thankfully remained dry.

First back for Blyth was Robbie Barkley in 16th position with a time of 58:38, followed by Peter Brown in 1:01:09 for 34th place overall.  First home for the ladies was Heather Christopher, in 233rd overall, recording a very respectable time of 1:14:28 in her first race, followed closely by Cath Young just 3 places further back in a time of 1:14:41.  Both the men’s (Robbie, Peter and Stevie G) and ladies (Heather, Cath and Julie) teams finished in 9th place.  A few pb’s were recorded on the day, including Helen Bruce, who knocked almost 2 minutes off her previous best, Davina, Julie and Colin.
