Autumn Relays - Wed 30th Oct 2019

The thirty third running of the Top House Autumn Relays was held on Wednesday the 30th of October 2019. A cold, breezy evening greeted the record number of 86 runners (28 complete and one incomplete team) for this annual 3 person team relay event. The previous highest number of teams was in 2014 when 19 teams took part.

Congratulations go to the winning team of Lee Elder, Kevin Freeman and Adam Stott (Team L) in a total time of 50:57, with team AA (Brian Shiel, Lucy Hickey and Sandra Watson) in second place, just 13 Seconds adrift and Team D (Peter Brown, Lynn Munro and Nick Pearson) third a further 40 seconds behind. Twenty four of the twenty eight complete teams finished in a time span of just under 3 minutes. As always in relay events it’s amazing how being part of a team is an incentive for people to try that little bit harder with 57 runners being quicker than expected, some by quite a margin.

Jake Jansen was fastest on the night with 12:08, which places him thirteenth fastest of all time (Jake is also 12th fastest overall with a time of 12:07 from 2015), Peter Brown was fastest male vet with 13:20. Kimberley Bryce was the quickest female with a time of 15:21 and Sandra Watson fastest female vet in 15:57.

A few statistics for those that are interested; the tremendous influx of new members to the club shows with 35 runners taking part for the first time giving a total of 400 different competitors over the years, with Mr reliable Steve Gillespie continuing with his incredible record of having now competed in all 32.

A mention for Steve Richardson, returning to the club after injury and doing the relays again after a gap of 10 years. Also to the fast improving David Stamp who took over 4 minutes off of his time from last year. Watch out Jake!

The usual thanks to Kevin, Liz, the timekeepers, Andi Capper and all their marshals/helpers for ensuring the event continues to run as smoothly as ever, as well as a record number of runners I believe there was probably a record number of marshals also, providing fantastic support around the course.

A note about the first leg runners from Team O (Rose Boldon) and Team DD (Jill Tulip), as their teams were last minute additions there was not enough time to recalculate all the handicaps so Team O and Team DD started 30sec and 50sec behind the main start, Rose and Jill’s times in the team results include this “handicap” whereas their individual times show the time they actually ran.
