Race 12 – Brampton to Carlisle 10M – Sun 19th November 2017

Going into the final race of the season, the winners of divisions 3, 4, 5 and 6 were already decided, but there were still other podium places up for grabs.

In Division 2, Richard Shillinglaw was ahead on points, but both Graham and Rob had a race in hand. With 5 wins in his other counting races, Graham only had to complete the race to win the division and it was also possible for Rob to overtake Richard.

In Division 1, Peter Brown could not be beaten on points, but could be equalled by Paul Whalley – but only if Paul took top points at Brampton.

Race morning was very cold, great for racing but not great for standing around beforehand! Dry conditions and virtually no wind made it ideal for PBs. Unsurprisingly, many were had across all divisions.

First back for Blyth was Gary Jones in an impressive 57:31. Second was Paul Whalley, also with a solid sub-60. Paul was also 3rd in the VM45 category. However, in the GP overall he had to settle for second place in division 1, finishing one point behind Peter Brown. Completing the podium places in the GP for Division 1 was Steven French.

Ian Baxter also had a great performance, knocking more than 2 minutes off his PB to finish in 63:59, but had not run enough races to feature in the podium places.

First to finish in Division 2 was Graham Wood with 63:08, making it a clean sweep of wins for him and a decisive win of the division. Richard Shillinglaw remained on 52 points to take second place and Rob Sharratt moved up to 3rd place, finishing only one point behind Richard.

First Blyth lady was Claire Calverley in 69:10, also taking 3rd place in the VF40 category and taking a huge chunk of almost 3 minutes off her PB from the same race last year.

Julie Lemin was already confirmed as winner of Division 3 and didn’t compete today. The only competitor from Division 3 today was Michael Ashby, who ran a sizeable PB of 83:10. This meant he finished in third place in the division overall, behind Julie and Billy Shaw.

In Division 4, the winner was already confirmed as Sandra Watson, who already had a clean sweep of wins and did not compete today. The other podium places were taken by Claire Mason who finished in 85:22 and Paul Blackett, who finished in 86:51. Going into the race Paul was one point ahead of Claire, so this race means they finish on equal points in the GP.

Anne Craddock had already won Division 5, but rounded off the season with another win, taking 5 minutes off her 10 mile PB to finish in 84:23. Next back was Lesley Falkous, followed by Rachel Joseph, who also took 2nd and 3rd place respectively in Division 5 in the GP overall.

Diane Wallace had already won Division 6, with a clean sweep of wins. She also ran today, finishing first in the division in 1:43:37, and third in the VF65 category. The remaining podium places in Division 6 were taken by Elaine Gillie, who did not compete today, and Colin Brown.
